We aren't looking down on these people for their clothing style, its their smug attitude that is generally the point of contention.
But here's the thing that is annoying me: do we actually know this guy's personality? Or what he's like? Has he been caught, or has the internet learned who he is? If so, please tell me. Otherwise, all these amazingly funny jokes have been conjured from a simple image without any actual knowledge. It proves to me that anyone wearing this kind of hat without a suit brings forth mockery first and foremost. If we knew this guy was a smug asshole, then I wouldn't even be bringing this all up. But we don't.

We know he is an asshole for stealing, sure, but I see very few people riding on his case for that. It's all about the hat, and we do not know if he is this so called "euphoric" guy or not. Maybe he is, but I just feel very uncomfortable in judging a persons character based on clothing alone.
Basically, whether or not the guy is a jackass or not (although since he robbed a church, I wouldn't doubt it) He fits the fedora wearing atheist stereotype to a T, its not us siding with the thief or ragging on his clothes, we are mostly laughing that he fits the stereotype (likely unintentionally) and are laughing about it, note there is little to no malice in most peoples posts, its mostly us de-railing the thread with glorious euphoria jokes.

The guys a jerk for stealing of course, but this thread was mostly derailed.
*tips fedora*

thank you for explaining it, hopefully the party poopers can finally join in on the fun, it's hilarious that the guy fits the stereotype to a "T" (as you put it nicely) even down to stealing from a church, not to mention the meme that has already a bunch of built up jokes for it...plus it's fun to mock assholes (the fact that he is robbing from the church proves that point).

wait a second...

this is entirely in jest, so please don't take it seriously like I'm attacking anyone

Just out of curiosity, is there some memetic link between ponies and atheism that I missed, or are people just tossing another 'acceptable target' label on the classic Euphoric Guy image?

If I recall, during r/atheism's "Euphoric" phase, when those guys would photograph themselves wearing trilbies while trying to look sophisticated, MLP merchandise often found its way into the shot, which kind of ruined the effect, so it got added to the stereotype. Of course this is just what I remember from hearsay and don't have an actual source, so don't quote me on that.

Nah, the euphoric meme came before the new MLP stuff really took off (the meme is actually pretty old in internet terms), like the euphoric guy himself, the stereotype started out with Sonic the Hedgehog, although he was the only one I ever saw with it in the picture, I think it just came along for the ride because euphoria guy is essentially the poster child for this particular stereotype.

The MLP connection came later, and usually involved photoshoping ponies into the pictures, like the magazine posted earlier. If I remember right, there was a rumor that it came about when some of the more well known euphoric atheists in r/atheism came out as bronies. Though, like anything from 4chan and the Reddit drama magnets, take that with a massive grain of salt.

It could have also come from the misogyny section as well, r/atheism gets a lot of cross over from boards like r/redpill (I think that's the board where a lot of the more extreme MRA crowd hangs out). Anyway, some of the more extreme MRA people would come out as bronies and attempt to hijack the fandom in the name of men, most of the more gross examples of misogyny from the fandom seems to come from that group that think they are striking a blow against "fake" geek girls moving in on their old mostly male fandoms. The crossover existed before between some atheists and a weird obsession with tearing down feminism as well as religion, so the connection might have been made there.

As with any of this stupid crap though, it's hard to separate fact from fiction, so the whole connection could have just been manufactured by Reddit and 4chan to keep the Euphoria meme relevant, as bronies started to push out Sonic fans as the popular group to try and beat up on. Hell, maybe it's a combination of all of the above, or none.

Huh, interesting. You know, the more I learn about things like this, the more I realize that the internet is simultaneously the most horrible thing in the world and the most wonderful, and no matter what, is always fascinating.
