European Wiis Won't Be Backwards Compatible Much Longer

Well there goes any notion of entertaining a hardcore crowd. The only reason I play Mario Kart Wii is because I can play it with a GameCube controller.

I'm sorry, Gamecube games? I didn't know the Wii could even run them and if it can, why would you want to? I checked eBay out of curiosity and you can pick up a used Gamecube for 12 bucks.

Yeah, I fail to see any problem with this, worst case is they may lose a few sales as people buy preowned Wii's for the BC element, anyone else will just be able to get a cheap new Wii.

I can't see a downside personally.

As long as they continue selling the BC Wii's alongside the non-BC ones then I see no problem.

I still use my gamecube when playing gameguce games despite having a wii.

If I didn't have either, and was planning on getting a wii, this would be a bad thing though, there would be games from the GC's library i'd like to play.

The future of gaming is in the fact you can play older games. So removing backwards capability is rather stupid

There are plenty of used Wiis on the market for those interested in backward compatibility, so I have no worries. And unlike the PS3 models, you don't have to pick between big+loud+compatible and small+silent+incompatible (and big+loud+incompatible). I mean, how much smaller can the new Wii even get? The disks have to fit in there somehow, and the power and display cables already are what's causing the most trouble finding a good spot for the thing. So it's not like you lose something by getting an old model.

This really is nothing to rage over. They're cutting production cost with the ports (controllers and memory cards) and the disk reader (dunno whether it requires a separate laser, but the slot-in mechanism needs to be able to handle the smaller disks). And they'll probably disable the one or other way it can be hacked. If you don't want it, don't buy it. The point to get angry is when they start sending out the new models as replacements for broken old models.

Yes, removing the backwards compatibility sucks, but what I don't understand is why it can't be used vertically. Wouldn't it be best for them to mess with the console as little as possible, considering making different consoles should cost them more than keeping the old ones? I mean, I can get that Nintendo can save by removing the controller ports and such, but making it horizontal-only?

And yes, removing backwards compatibility sucks, especially for those who buy a Wii without hearing about this and are expecting to play their old games, although I do think that most of those will already have got it. The Wii has been out for like, what? 5-6 years?

Fuck that Nintendo.

I use my Gamecube games more than my Wii games.
I don't ever play DBZ TB2 without my gamecube controller.

Guess I'll hold on to my Gamecube for some more time.

Meanwhile the present version of the Wii will be phased out of Europe.
...Yeah,I feel kinda bad for you guys, even though you're getting the RPGs this is still something I would suspect would've happened to us stupid Americans, but I guess everyone in America already owns a Wii.

Makes sense. Best way to make money is to target the cheap crowd.

And before you say anything, how do you think Steam keeps getting my money?

Will GC controllers still work? As I use them whereever possible with Wii games, they just work better for Mario kart, SMash Bros, etc...

Not that I greatly care, having a Wii already and all. (And not touching it in at least a year...)

Well... This doesn't really effect me stateside, but I was getting a little pissed as I was furious when I found out my PS3 wouldn't play my PS2 library, even though I had just saw a commercial bragging about it being BC (Yeah, I picked up a new model at Best Buy just when they snuffed out the BC ones and replaced them with the non BC ones so I was boned). Since which, I vowed to not give Sony another dime and now buy anything related to Sony used, but that seems to be different than this. That happened like a year or 2 after they launched the PS3 (if that long) and this is coming up at the end of the Wii's life cycle. Like people have said, most anyone who wanted a BC Wii probably already has one, and those that don't can still get one easily either now or later used. Its not like the PS3s where the BC ones are ticking time bombs always around the corner from YLoD, and the ones that do get sold used can get up to $500... Damn I hate Sony :/

No gamecube controllers? Kinda worhtless for anything resembling a hardcore crowd then no?

What will they be using for, say, Smash Bros. tourneys now?
Well, Wiimote + nunchuck is just as good for Super Smash Bros. The classic controller is even better at it than the GameCube controller.

Oh, and pigs can fly.
Unless they make classic controllers that are exactly the same as GameCube controllers they will seriously alienate a lot of their fans. I've never played Super Smash Bros. with anything but a GameCuce controller... well I have played it with a Nintendo 64 controller, but that was still a controller with all the required buttons.

OT: Oh god I hope nintendo doesn't sell a damn one of these (not to make them go bankrupt or anything) but to prove how incredibly retarded this idea is.

gamecube was your stallion, don't fucking retire the best damn thing to happen to your Wii

I dont understand the rage, the Wii has litterally maybe a year and a half left in its life span, Gamecube games cant really be bought at anything besides private used game stores as even gamestop doesnt carry many of them anymore, and if you dont have a wii now you probably dont have a gamecub, if they can get the price down to under a hundred I can see this being a smart move for the holydays, honestly anyone complaining is just being stupid.

They did something similar with the GameCube. They removed something that was never used by anyone
I hate it when people try to defend the removal of BC with some bullshit about how "nobody uses it". That's a load of crap.

I literally do not know a single person that did not use their PS2's to play PS1 games as well. BC is important, and it saddens me when people spew nonsense about how "nobody cares about it".

I care, and so do a shitload of other people.
Oh, sorry, I was thinking of the removal of the D-terminal on the GameCube. Not the backward compatibility on the Wii. I was simply saying that they removed something NO-ONE used on the GameCube to drop the price.

If you had read this part of my post:
OT: At first I thought there was going to be an update making me unable to play GameCube games and that worried me quite a lot. A cheaper Wii doesn't worry me that much. Since I already got a Wii that is backward compatible and a GameCube somewhere I wont cry because of this.
You would have understood that removal of backward compatibility was something I DID worry about. Please in the future, read the complete post and think about what it actually says before you flare up in rage. I am not defending Nintendo. I am simply saying this doesn't affect me at all.

Then you could save $12 plus shipping and play it on your Wii. Not to mention having both a Wii and a Gamecube hooked up at the same time is wasting slots on your TV.
