My brother and I were talking about the remakes recently-ish. And we came across an observation
Rei is the sexual fantasy. Demure, passive, obedient, submissive.
Asuka is the polar opposite. Feisty, fiery, dominant, "bitchy", etc. She's the sexual reality, though I said the extreme case. Most women probably aren't THAT extreme. Most.
Misato I don't know. Older Woman Experience.
Then there are Shinji's friendships.
Toji is the bully-turned-friend, the guy who beats him up one time but then offers him a hand in friendship. Masculine NoHoMo friendship/love/rivalry etc.
Kaworu on the other hand, shows Shinji a lovely time, and tutors him. It's love. Not sex. Not necessarily homosexual, I don't think. Just, you know, plain old fashioned love. And that love is mainly in a mentor/student kind of way. He's teaching Shinji to Art Harder, and I dare say he got a lot of enjoyment out of the piano lessons, what with the Nothing Else To Do and all that. He loved teaching a student how to play music. That's Angelic.
I especially liked how the remake #3 drew it out more than the series. In the series it was over before it began. In the remake, we're not entirely sure how long it lasted, but it definitely got the screentime that I think it should have.
Of course, Kaworu might've simply been using Shinji and training him in musical duet-ness purely in order to operate that new Eva... Which I think he did at first, but then realised he was wrong to (and thus wrong to use Shinji in that way).
Kensuke is the biggest fan-boy of the characters, of course.
Just some thoughts between my bro and I.
I eagerly await #4.
