EVE Gets The Space IRS In

Back in December, CCP realized that rampant piracy was distorting the EVE economy and responded the best way it possibly could - by blowing everything to smithereens.

This sordid tale [http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&bid=626] begins with a group of starbases that were producing materials far beyond their specifications. It turns out that a group of players discovered an exploit allowing starbases to produce output without first having any input; in other words, create something from nothing. By milking the exploit for all it was worth, the players raked in trillions of illegal ISK's (EVE's currency).

Once CCP figured out which starbases were creating these products, they channeled their inner Luke Skywalkers, basically flying up to the bases and hitting that thermal exhaust port. BOOM. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3r2_RD5SQN0&feature=related]

After the destruction of the offending reactors, the ban-nuke went off catching 134 players within its blast, shredding their accounts, ships and ISKs. This wasn't just the reactor owners but "fences" that had been used to launder the money as well.

Of the seven corporations involved, two were trading to real life money, but most of the in-game items that were proven to be involved, even indirectly, were destroyed.

CCP then went on an Internal Security sweep to make sure that the exploit hadn't been leaked from inside the company. The company is also re-evaluating all of its bug-checking, system-checking and general report-checking to make sure this never happens again.

We shall see.

Everyone of these articles makes me want to play this game so bad, but I've played the demo and I didn't like it.

Why doesn't CCP have it's own indestructible death fleet yet?

It would be extremely cool(er) to have players in game who were on the run from 'them' for their various hacking or exploit misdemeanors. Ot to have new players desperately hiding in the fleet's shadow for protection.

Dude... That would be INCREDIBLE. Instead of being outright banned, these ppl get an email or whatever stating their crimes and what they are wanted for. A manhunt begins. they get to keep their ships and all that crap until the "police" (read - death fleet) tracks them down and blows them to smithereens.

Even put a bounty on them for regular players to shoot for. "Kill these nub haxer and get 3 billion isk".

How frickin sweet would that be?

that would just encourage hacking though

although it would be sweet

how about putting a permanent bounty on the players and anything they own, making the game unplayable

Too bad we can't take this solution straight to Wall Street.

Nothing like a good deterrent when a punishement and an example are made for everyone to take notice.

Yay CCP!

I dunno, having an unstoppable fleet of warships coming to write you out of the game could make for a pretty effective deterent, how would you ever out-hack the games devs?

Why do anything that would even remotely make this fun for the guilty people? Instant banning is the only way. Not to mention operating this "death fleet" would require additional effort and resources from CCP.

That report from CCP linked in the article is amazing. So much detail.

Absolutely, I really couldn't do it justice in the small space I had to write about it. If you're at all interested in EVE or economics, I'd put an hour or two aside to go through it.

Another interesting EVE story, though I like hearing the stories about this game I dislike MMOs, so I won't ever play it. However, I'll keep reading up on this stuff, as it's hilarious.

Jeez, EVE is now officially more eventful (and interesting) than the real world, which scares me.

Remind me to check it out one time.

Ditto 100% QFT. BUT... I'm thinking I'm gonna play it anyway and force myself to like it.

QFT

Wow, even with the warning I wasn't expecting that much text. Almost makes me want to play, but I'm still recovering from the last MMO I played.

Read close, True Believer, it was noticed in December, the big ban-nuke only just went off when they found out how.
The big ban nuke went off start of January.... they took out an entire alliance of these exploiting fucks and left a huge hole in the political map. However, good show by all!
