I was just thinking if anyone else decides to follow some NPC's around in games? Right now, I'm following Dave, former leader of the "Republic of Dave" in Fallout 3, just to see what exactly happens to him when he attempts annex a town.

Now, I've never cared for him, so I have no idea what is driving me to do this right now, probably a mixture of boredom and pity for this guy.

So, is there any NPC that you guys and gals have followed to the proverbial ends of the earth? Why? Or am I just weird? =/

You mean besides following the guards around at night in Oblivion to grind up the Sneak skill and negate the effects of leveled armor on enemies?

Marshal what's his face. Through Blackrock Depths. Ugh.

Edit: For bad obsolete purple headgear off a grumpy black dragon.

Haha hey, that can count. I guess what I'm getting at are those NPC's that you know are "done" with whatever story they had and really have no "future" in their virtual lives. Sure, a guard could count. Same goes for any open-world/sandbox games. Or maybe if you kept alive a certain guy in Call of Duty or something like that.

I've followed M'aiq the Liar a few times on Oblivion. Not so much on Morrowind.

And Runs-in-Circles, because I like giving her carrots and shoes.

Not usually, but I often try to keep one soldier alive in an RTS. I usually name him something generic, Billy or Jimmy or Stevenson, but I have to send him into combat otherwise I'm "cheating". When he dies - and he always dies - I scream "Billy?! Billy?! Biiiiiillyyyyyy!" at the computer.

I'm not weird. You're weird.

I followed someone around for that Oblivion quest where you need to threaten them, but it was really boring. That was about when I gave up on Oblivion.

Oh, oops. Oh well, it was about equally pointless, come to think of it.

I tend to play healing classes, so I'm actually prone to following and buff/healing NPCs when I can. It's the principle of the matter - no one wanders away from me without a full health bar, not even an AI, dammit!

Well, he just established the "New Republic of Dave"....in the middle of a Deathclaw Nesting Ground X_x It was pretty neat though that he actually said it. He turned to me after he squatted down on the ground and said "This is the New Republic of Dave....Go Away." At least they put in a line to make my travel with him not so meaningless =P And sp0rk, I'm the same way (If I play a healer) Especially pets in WoW, when I used to play that is.

I'd love to post pics to show what he does and just some moments from our adventure, unfortunately, I don't know how to do that nor do I think anyone really cares that much.

Also, he started shooting me after I clicked on him for the 3rd time. And to think I helped that bastard set up his new republic...the Deathclaws can have him!

One time in GTA IV, I got a guy arrested and followed the cop car he was in for like ten minutes. They just drove randomly around the city. I can't remember if I killed them all or if I just gave up.

Just today I was going to stalk that black guy in Rivet City because I didn't know where the council meeting was. I got there just as the market opened at 8AM monday morning, and there he was sitting at the bar. He sat there for about a minute (An hour in game time I guess), then stood up and said, "Shit, I have a council meeting." He then walked over to his shop and stood there doing nothing. I guess he wasn't going to the meeting this week.

Haha, priceless. That is Bannon if I recall correctly. I also remember doing something like that in GTAIII, instead I just followed a hobo around for a good 10minutes and then he went down an alley...lets just say the city had a new serial killer to deal with. The Infamous Hobo Slasher. Okay, so it wasn't entirely like yours, but you know what I mean =P

In Fallout 3, I followed James all the way from Vault 112 to Rivet City. I still don't know why I did.

So there are others that do this too! I don't know why I followed Dave either >_< I'm still hangin' with him at his new found Republic too...*sigh* I need better things to do.

I used to think I had to do that in Oblivion, for all those side quests and such. Now that I think of it, there was a whole lot of those quests where people followed you or you followed them. And I actually walked everywhere, because, do to past experiences on older games, I thought if you fast-travelled you would have to go back and get them again.
Those were many hours wasted, unfortunately.

Anyway, I followed Jericho from Megaton after I blew it up. I found it funny he survived, so I decided to follow him through the wasteland. I think he was wandering in the direction of downtown D.C., but I eventually just got sick of it, and left.

I think because they couldn't obviously give all the NPCs logical paths in games like GTA, they made the killing fun; they hoped that you'd get bored of following them before they arrived, and kill them. GTA probably started out as an open-world sandbox kite-sim, but because people were following NPCs around, they added the killing. And it all went from there.

Well you're kind of forced to follow NPC's around in Splinter Cell. Due to comp lag the normally see me so they end up dead. But when I'm not stabbing the military in the back I'm in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. stalking enemy soldiers and praying they don't see me why I try and find a safe spot.

I followed people in GTAIV back when I played it, then killed them in some gruesome way (mowing them over with a car over and over, sniper shot from a foot away, etc.) but I haven't for a while.

The closest I can think of is this.

I went to the Super Duper Mart. Talon Mercs were there. I killed them. Bryan Wilks was there. I followed him back to Grayditch.
