Ever wondered JUST how impractical and silly the buster sword really is?

It was bound to happen. From the time he started these awesome vids, FF7 fans have been going off like mad to have this thing made.

This thing is just hilarious.
No one can even hold it. It almost maimed the smith just carrying it out of his shop.

I'm betting since he caved and made this, hopefully we'll see a daedric sword at some point, since that seems to be pretty popular as well. I wouldn't mind the gun-blade though, since it's not as stupidly over sized as the BS.

So, did you enjoy the video?
What would like to see him make next?

That looks really cool though. Has he made lightning's gunblade? That would be interesting to see.

The dude doing the cutting looked pretty much exactly like Ulysses from Lonesome Road.
And demonstrated how hilariously, retardedly impractical (and awesome) this thing is.
Yay!

Something impractical in a japanese anime styled video game? :O
Never would have assumed that.

The cutting part at the end was pretty demonstrative that it's bloody useless as an actual sword. None of the items were actually cut by the blade's edge, they were simply smashed by the descending weight of the sword itself.

It's essentially a club.

That's incredible, I can't believe they actually made that. It looks even more absurd in real life. Can you imagine trying to do the victory twirl? :p

While I agree the one in the video isn't very sharp, and nor I find are that many of the weapons in the series, I'd say it's because he had to make the sharp part just the edge and stick it into a groove. It could have been a lot sharper if it had started angling where the fictional one does.

The video is pretty cool, very neat idea. The "sword" itself though is just so terribly lame. It's the main reason why I've never gotten into jRPGs, the art style and designs are atrocious. How am I supposed to take it all seriously when you have skinny dudes wielding those giant arse swords that even a war god would struggle with? Not to mention how ugly they look.

Dang, someone beat me to it.

With Berserk it adds to the character though. Whenever ordinary people see Guts with his sword the common reaction is "What the fuck! How can anybody wield something so stupidly huge?" Sorta laughing it off. But then he starts swinging it around and they're all "Holy shit, he's actually doing it - Fucking run!!!"

Pfft. Haha, when have swords ever been practical in anime, manga, or jrpgs?

Ah, Guts from Berserk, king of Fuck Off Giant Swords. Granted, Guts is scary even without the sword, which can't be said of many JRPG characters.

Oh...reminds me of Soul Drinker, where they had a sword bigger than that that was sensible-ish, because it had anti-gravity motors so you could swing it. Unfortunately that meant it could only be swung in certain maneuvers, which was a real shortcoming.

In a world where people run up the sides of buildings and essentially fly around during sword fights, I think the suspension of disbelief is already there. Aside from the huge dragons being summoned (Bahamut 0)... Of course real world physics means jack shit in fantasy.

Great video, I love things like that. I also saw this video in which some guy tries to use a buster sword, but it was so heavy he couldn't even get the power to swing it. half way through the video someone else tries and he can only just about swing it haha.

I have been watching that channel ever since I came across the Finn sword video. Yeah he is pretty much an awesome blacksmith (I wonder why it's taking long for the next video to be up since his new video are usually up every week?).

Anyway as for me I would love to see him forging the Master Sword from Legend of Zelda and my bro (I shown him some of the video) is the sword of Omens from Thundercats!

Doesn't Cloud have like superhuman strength or something?

Anyway, in the off chance you could actually find someone to effectively wield that monster with agility comparable to a normal soldier wielding a normal sword, there are some significant advantages to that much bulk.

First, because of its mass, it would be effective against a heavily armoured target. Remember that impact force per area is squared if the impacting area is halved, and force is dependent on mass. Having all that mass behind the cutting edge could make it much easier to cut through armour or, failing that, would be effective as a bludgeoning instrument.

Pretty much. If you treat like a club with a cutting edge rather than a very heavy sword, the role of such a weapon could become clearer.

Second, as a fencer for my school, I can tell you that parrying even a 2 pound sword is surprisingly difficult. I would not want to be a soldier in the position of trying to block that monster, which from a video I saw once weighed in at like 60 pounds (I sadly cannot watch youtube videos on this computer so I can't watch the on you've linked). Blocking such a weapon would be very, very difficult.

Now, given that there are also guns in the FF7 world I don't really see the point of a sword, but if for whatever reason you felt like using a buster sword those are the advantages you'll have.
