Recently bought Fallout 3. I got Dogmeat as a companion. I just love dogs, but I honestly feel Dogmeat to be a slight burden. He too often dashes into large gunfights or, when he first died, to fight two Yao Guais. I set him on fire a couple times when using the Shishkebab on enemies. But he still manages to make himself useful by distracting nearly every enemy as they seem to target him more, and allow me to escape some fights unscathed. Of course, a double-edged sword as everyone targets him. I wish companions were "essential" in this game like New Vegas so they wouldn't die permanently. Having someone to back you up in fights is especially helpful, but it also adds a lot of worry to make sure your companions don't do anything stupid to get themselves killed or just get themselves killed period.
