A documentary crew visits with a vampire "family" in Belgium. It follows the highs and lows of a traditional family as they are dealing with annoying neighbors, infidelity, and a suicidal daughter who wants to be human again. Thinking about it, it has a similar theme to Only Lovers Left Alive. They are both addressing how easy and comfortable to get caught up in a mundane rut. Why it's better to live outside of your comfort zone more often. I hope this is one movie that most of you haven't heard of before. I also hope that you would check it out. I think most of you will like it.

I recently saw the Spanish movie "Witching and Bitching" on netflix.

It's a horror comedy about a dead beat dad who commits a robbery and as he's fleeing Spain and trying to get to the French border he encounters a coven of witches. Kind of a weird and entertaining movie, and it's topical because the witches turn out to be radical feminists who want to kill all men. It's funny in a groan-worthy slapstick kind of way and not particularly clever, but it's also strangely enjoyable.

You should watch the Spanish film The Skin I Live In. It?s honestly the best psychological horror film I?ve seen yet, analysing what can happen when a man get lost on his road to get revenge on the guy who raped his daughter.

One of my real life fears are overzealous people. People who are so dogmatic about their religious and/or political beliefs that they will do anything to convert or destroy anybody who have a different point of view. So, how does a guy who is best known for making movies about stoners and slackers handle this subject?


My favorite quote from the movie sums it up the best: "Simple has just shit itself!" This is a brilliant, twisty, nuance movie about the dangers of dogmas and absolutes. The main conflict is between the ultra-conservative religious group and the federal government. There are an embarrassment of riches with the cast. The cast includes 2 Breaking Bad alums(Deputy Badger!), Stephen Root, Kevin Pollack, and Melissa Leo. Michael Parks and John Goodman both gave Oscar-worthy performances in this movie. I don't think people who really need to get the message of the movie will understand or appreciate it. For everyone else, forget about Jay & Silent Bob. This is Kevin Smith's most thought-provoking movie since Dogma.

As I'm getting down to the last five movies in this project, the challenge is to decide which ones will stand out as something interesting to share. As oppose to something I would find interesting that others wouldn't. I picked the next movie because I am not a fan of the director's most famous movie The Exorcist. Like I said before, the worst thing that a horror movie could be is boring. My eyes glazed over in boredom when I saw The Exorcist. So, how would I like one of his last effort in the horror genre?


This movie is based on a play by Tracy Lett. Which you should seriously check out other movies based on his plays and movies written by him. The movie is set like a theater production. Most of the movie takes place inside a motel room. The close quarters makes you really focus on the performances of Ashley Judd and Michael Shannon. They play lonely, emotionally damaged people who fall in love. While bugs are slowly eating away at them. I really hate to say anything more about the plot. It's one of those movies where the less you know before hand. The more you will enjoy it. Highly recommended.

I ended up doing a double feature today. There was a couple of reasons for doing that. First reason is I have about 3 times as many movies I set aside for this project than I have days. The second reason is the first movie that I watched. I was not sure it was appropriate for this project. It's called Worst Horror Movie Ever Made. Trailer:http://youtu.be/d0BiCInKH2U With the bar set that low, it was interesting to see if they could achieve it. Fortunately, they didn't. It wasn't for the lack of trying. Bad acting, nonsensical story, cheesy special effects, etc. It does achieve the "it's so bad, that it's good" level of bad movies. It has a feel of a Troma movie. Where they were winking at the camera so much that their eyelids were cramping up. This movie is not recommended for the easily or moderately offended. They do push a lot of controversial buttons. Let me put it this way, Jesus Christ is portrayed as a horror monster. There is also nudity and rapes played for laughs. I liked it, but definitely NOT for everyone.

The second feature is a classic movie that I have not seen before. It's one of those movies that I don't know why I waited so long to see it.


Is there seriously a better role for Jeff Goldblum than this one? Both Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum were great. This is a remake of the classic horror movie of the same name from 1958 starring Vincent Price. The story reminded me of Flowers For Algernon. With The Fly, instead of the person getting smarter, he gets stronger and healthier than he had been before. The last third of the movie is where they earned the classic horror movie status. Great makeup effects portraying the transformation. Also, an interesting plot development that they had set up for a possible sequel. The story was not as deep as I hoped it would be. It was great that I finally watched this movie.

Being an American, I am obligated to say "America is the greatest country in the world!" It isn't, but we like to believe that it is. One reason that it is hard to believe it is our health care system. Conservatives had a hard time advocating against Obamacare. The reason is Obamacare is not liberal enough. The whole thing was a giveaway to pharmaceutical and insurance companies. Which makes this next movie's premise even more real.


Set in the near future, where your organs get repossessed if you can't pay your medical bills. Repo! is actually an opera. I would say at least 90% of the movie is sung. A very eclectic cast that features Anthony Stewart Head (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Alexa Vega (Spy Kids) as well as Paris Hilton, Sarah Brightman, and Paul Sorvino. The real musical standout was Paul Sorvino. He has a great operatic singing voice. Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman who had done a few Saw movies. This movie is stylish, unique, gory, and has catchy songs throughout. Now I want to see more horror musicals. Have Freddy, Jason, Chucky, Michael Myers, and Pinhead be in a musical monster mash.

At the risk of sounding like an old man, kids have it really easy today. All they have to worry about is terrorism and school shootings. When I did duck and cover drills at school, it wasn't to avoid bullets, it was nuclear bombs.



This is one movie I went back and forth debating if this could be considered a horror movie. Watching it again, it does an incredible job of making every aspect of this movie seem like a documentary. The horror lies in the details of what it would be like to survive a nuclear attack. Even 31 years later, this movie is simply hard to watch. It is brutal in it's depiction of physical deterioration of the body when it's suffering from radiation poisoning. Would you believe that this is a TV movie? It was shown on primetime network television. This movie is a must-see.

The last movie is the one I tell everyone is the scariest movie of all time. I haven't seen it for a long time. So, does it hold up as being as scary as I remembered? Especially after watching so many horror movies that past couple of week.


I think one secret of a successful horror movie is that it exploit some kind of fear that you have in everyday life. One of my fears is to say the same word five times in a mirror. No, I'm kidding. I have a fear of stinging insects like bees and wasps. When the boogieman in the movie is someone swarming with bees, that bothers me immensely. Beyond that, it's a really solid movie. Well acted. It have some interesting storylines. Good special effects.

So, with that I am done with this project. I think I'll sign off by saying Candyman five times in a mirror.
