There are a ton of videos on youtube about base and trap design, go watch them.
If I can be bothered I'll post up an image of my barracks later, I'm somewhat proud of them.

I really enjoyed this game! I've been looking for this again - would love to give it another go.

I agree with the base creation - I found sometimes I had built in apparent 'good design' only to be foiled later when some of my minions just got stuck. And the chaps from the UN (it was the UN wasn't it who come in to do their regular inspections?) Youtube as someone has already suggested is a good idea :)

I'd advise you to mess around with the config and enable a bigger pool of minions. I may be a whimp, but I found the game to be crazy difficult even on the first island, especially when the super agents start showing up. Apart from that, try to plan out your base from the very beginning. Large quarters allows you to hire more guys, etc. Also, a very handy trick, at the very beginning, before you even capture the maid, no agents will come to your island to snoop around. During this time, you can put as many people on the map as you want, and steal a ton of cash before the game really starts. It's sort of cheese, but I found it more fun when I could just focus on trying to build my base to perfection.

Lastly, Maximillian's bonus to research doesn't actually to anything, and as such he's probably the worst genius to pick. The woman (I forget her name) has a huge sphere of influence, and is in my opinion the best genius to pick when you're starting off for the first time.

Happy taking over the world!

Plot your base before you build it.

Create an inner and an outer base, so you at least look respectable.

Create a few S bends and long corridors so tourists don't explore too far.

Have a shack outside for storing the inflatable Science machine - makes it easier to steal.

Always send in 150% of what a mission needs if you want to beat the odds.

Keep one fire extinguiser per corridor.

Always double-tap.

Dummy Level 4 doors are like Hero Bait. A blank wall with a trap behind ensures they're left dumbfounded.

Don't leave your ill gotten gains where burglars can find them - unless you want them to be found.

Test everything - Science is the way forward.

Make sure you've amassed a cool Meeeeeelion before you let the authorities know who you are. Minions don't come cheap, although they go very cheaply.

Don't employ any Dutch people, or Scottish people with a taste for babies.

Work towards 100 minions. 5 specialists of each - 10 trainers of each and the rest as basic minions.

A scared crew is a productive crew. Randomly execute someone now and then.

Traps are for enemies, don't place them where your minions tend to run. Unless you want a giggle.

Practice your gloating.

Not really...it was the special forces of various nations trying to infiltrate, sabotage, investigate or assassinate you, or trying to steal your precious gold and treasure, the bastards!

Here are 11 tips i have concocted from experience with the game

Tip 1: Capture as many unlucky souls as you can, sit back and gloat at your impenetrable trap network!

Tip 2: Never make a hotel, its alot of money wasted on a cover show that never lasts, when the big boys show up they will turn your hotel resort into a battlefield!

Tip 3: Be an absolute dick, it comes with the job of being short and evil >=D

Tip 4: The henchman Ivan has a bazooka great for crowd control.... use him cautiously indoors...

Tip 5: Valets are good for one thing, disposing of corpses, other than that you will only need them for missions

Tip 6: Get all the loot you can, it gives your men super work ethic!

Tip 7: Fire can be your friend, but more likely your enemy, if you do plan on placing fire traps keep a whole lot of fire extinguishers and technicians ready, you will need them!

Tip 8: Combo traps, you gain super awesome points if you link your traps to others, as an example think of a giant fan blowing you into a piranha tank!

Tip 9: Valets always set off traps, so don't keep to many running around, upgrade them ASAP

Tip 10: Yellow Alert, its your best friend, play the game on this mode constantly, your men will equip themselves with guns and nades and head out killing anything you tag!

Tip 11: RED ALERT, for the last hour of play this button will be your best friend >=D

Thanks for the correction! Yes, these guys - I'd always trap them somewhere the let them squirm for as long as possible but then kill 'em off. At the end of the day they are all tattle-tales.

Or from GoG.com [http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/evil_genius] if you dislike Steam and/or want it fully DRM free.

I've got Evil Genius, just waiting until the end of my exams next Wednesday before I sit down and actually play it. Can't wait!

It's been years since I played this, but does anyone else recall that building a hotel was absolutely a waste of time? As well as being completely anachronistic. Let's build a tourist hotel on the island of our secret base...

My best tip is to either not get Red Ivan, or if you do, make sure he never fights inside of your base. I lost many a minion and had a lot of things wrecked because of that dude.

The game lies, you are actually a good guy trying to find a cure for cancer, the agents in your base are rival pharmaceutical companies.
