I've been kind of surprised that there's been absolutely no mention of Evo 2011 on a gaming community site,(if there has blame the search function not me)so I decided to get the ball rolling myself.

For those who may not know, Evolution is the single largest fighting game tournament in the world with participants from, I believe, 40 countries this year. Several tournaments for different games were held including:

Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition 1500+ contestants
Marvel vs Capcom 3 1500+ contestants
Mortal Kombat 500+ contestants
Tekken 6 I can't remember with any kind of accuracy the entry numbers for the rest.
Blazblue

There was a major upset this year when Daigo "The Beast" Umehara, one of Japan's 5 Fighting Game Gods and widely considered the best Streetfighter player of all time(he in fact holds the Guiness World Record for Most Major SF Tournaments won), was not only beaten but perfected by Poongko of Korea during the semi-finals, sending him into the loser's bracket. Once there, Daigo was beaten by Latif and eliminated from the tournament.

Over on the MvC3 scene there was an incredibly impressive performance given by Noah Solis, who placed in the top 48. Noah Solis is 8 years old, and has quickly begun being hailed as "The Prodigy." The kid is legitimately good, and I believe he earned it. However, I have to feel bad for everyone he played against being put in the position of being either the guy who beat up the 8-year-old or the guy who got beaten by the 8-year-old. Also, I can't see thousands of people booing you for trying to win helping someone play their best. And in a tournament no less! The audacity of these people actually competing to the best of their abilities after paying the entrance fee into the biggest event of the year /end sarcasm. Lose/lose situations are never fun.

So did anyone else watch or have a favorite moment they'd like to share? I heard that the MK9 finals were quite the nail biter, but I missed them myself. I was quite sad.

I missed most of it on account of work, only seeing stuff on Sunday.

Caught the Blazblue finals, which were pretty good. As a Guilty Gear fan, I was glad to hear that Blazblue was one of the games being played this year. Sparks' Hakumen was amazing too, that guy was a damn wall.

Tekken 6, or should I say Tekken BOB, was pretty boring to me. Don't get me wrong, I like Tekken. Hell, I like almost all the big fighting games on some level, but when almost everyone's using the same damn guys, it gets stale. So I took off and unfortunately ended up missing nearly everything up until SSF4:AE.

I really thought Daigo would switch back to Ryu at some point, but no, he stuck to Yun. I honestly wonder how things would have turned out if he had chosen to fight with Ryu again though. Regardless, even though he lost, he never seemed to lose his composure.

The finals were really entertaining for me though. I'll admit right here, I don't much like Poongko. He just came off as super cocky to me, so although he beat Daigo, I was smiling ear to ear when he was knocked out by Latif and Fuudo. And nothing against Latif, he seems like a cool guy and, he did some amazing stuff, but I'm glad Fuudo won in the end. Mainly cause I like rooting for the underdog (the Japanese guy in front of the American audience), but also cause he just seemed like a really humble guy.

All in all, good stuff. I wish I had gotten to see more MVC3 though. The matches that I did see where phenomenal.

See I liked how cocky Poongko portrayed himself. I mean it's just all about showmanship and that guy had it in spades. Whereas Daigo is just completely unflappable at all times. The man must be a hell of a poker player too. I recall one of the Japanese in the top 8 of AE was straight up trolling the crowd after he won and it was just amazing. I want to say it was Kindevu.

As for MvC3, the finals were great, but in my opinion, the quarterfinals on Saturday was where the real action went down. Viscant was winning a little too handily for me to really get into the finals. Whereas the quarter finals had some absolutely insane matches like Mike Ross vs DR Ray. The end of this match is just...insane.

My buddy linked me some Noah videos.

Honestly, if you were there watching some eight-year-old go toe to toe with these professional gamers, you'd root for him too. It's like watching a AAA baseball team take on a pro team. No one is going to root for the pros. They may bet on them, but everyone likes to see an underdog win.

Oh believe me I know. I was totally cheering for the kid. And he was eliminated by Chris G who placed like 9th in MvC3 and was in the finals for MK so there's definitely no shame losing to him. And like I said he legitimately deserved those wins. Kid's damn good.
