War has had a constant evolution through out time. First it was simple weapons made of stone and wood with bows and arrows, it then evolved to bronze, copper, iron and steel. in the 11th century, the first guns were in recorded use in the field of war. These smooth bore guns were inaccurate and dangerous to both the target and the user. Muskets evolved a much more advanced firing system from there and improved the accuracy. I the 17th century(I think) rifles started appearing, these vastly affected the American Revolutionary war because of German immigrants bringing rifles from the homeland. Rifles are more accurate because of groves in the barrel. The most famous story from the time was a sharpshooter with a Philadelphia rifle aiming at a British officer, the first shoot missed entirely, the second grazed him, the third hit him in the stomach which killed him before he hit the ground.
In the Civil war scopes were introduced along with percussion caps to bring the smoke level down, which improved accuracy at long ranges. in the 20th century two thing that would change war forever happen, the invention of rapid fire and the aircraft, which both speak for themselves. Then, the most powerful modern weapon of them all

Now my question to you is this, what is the next advance in military technology

My primary guess is laser technology, for it has both offensive and defensive capabilities.

Umm, they had automatic weapons -before- the advent of the 20th century you know? In fact, the first repeating crossbow is several hundred years old. From 120AD abouts I think.

I'll assume the 'most powerful modern weapon' you are referring to are nuclear weapons right? In which case, the best use for them is really neat. That is: Not having to use them, if your enemies know that you can vaporise entire cities with the push of a button they'll be a little less likely to engage you...that -usually- works hah.

As for tomorrow? I don't think there will be one 'next big thing' as, there are any number of new weapons in development as we speak. But...I'd say mechanised warfare has a good look in. Bring on the robots!

ohh forgot about those crossbows but the main use for nuclear weapons in my opinion is a scare tactic as you said
