Hello there! I haven't made a thread in a while and this idea has been bothering me for a while, and it's if you have a personal 'rule' as it were, what are your exceptions to it?

I'll give you an example, I personally, dislike many anime for a variety of reasons (yes yes yes, I understand it's deep and meaningful and that 'It's not just fanservice, honest!') but I utterly LOVE Samurai Champloo, or that I dislike people who are extravagant in their sexuality (the horrific amount of Dude-bro Rugby players i know sees to that) yet Graham Norton holds a special place in my heart.

So, don't be shy, come on!

I have a personal rule to try and not judge something like a film or video game until I can see sufficient information about it (generally an entire level or 10-20 minutes of uninterrupted gameplay, or in the case of films or music until I watch/listen to it myself).

I broke it upon seeing the trailer for Sonic Boom.

I also break it for The Hangover series, which I will always refuse to watch simply on principle.

They are the few times my pure visceral reactions will override my logical standing on entertainment. Though I will allow Sonic Boom the opportunity to surprise me, which is more than I can say for The Hangover.

While I tend to have a forgiving attitude but that does not apply to my former friends back in Highschool. They can pretty much just f--- off for all I cared (I refuse to accept their apologies should they be remorseful toward me)!
Also while I am open to people opinion on their review of a film, I am pretty much dimissive to one of my cousins when it come to a film review. She loved Twilight and and thought The Hunger Game is a good film, in another word she is the demography for those films.

Be nice to everyone.

Unless someone is horrible and wronged me in some way. Then I'll go out of my way to make that persons life a misery and laugh when they fail. I'll turn into an absolute demon ***** and slowly try to destroy them.

And if I have anything on them that could cause problems, they're fucked basically.

Finish every single game i start regardless of quality to not have a backlog. The exception to this rule is Metroid :Other M. It was just that bad .

I also failed to complet Record of agrest war: zero and resonance of fate not because they were bad but because i'm too retarded to understand the combat system.

I always make myself finish a book I read more than about 25% through. This rule made me finish Stephen King's Firestarter, a horribly written and inaccurate biography of Al Capone, as well as quite a few other fictional stories that I have since forgotten the name of.

But there is one book that I could not force myself to finish, and that is book four of Dean Koontz's Frankenstein. I don't know if he got worse or if I just had poor taste before that point, but all of the characters were one-dimensional, political and religious messages were pushed on the reader, and all of the events as well as the plot as a whole were completely unbelievable. The lesson that I took from that experience is to never read any more Koontz.

I will give everybody the benefit of the doubt, no matter how sketchy, dishonest, or poorly behaved they come across as

.....

Unless they drive a Mustang, then they're almost definitely a douche bag.

Never buy the complete series of an anime without watching all of the episodes (or at least the first few episodes) firsthand... So far, only the anime series Rin, Baccano!, .Hack//Quantum, and Haganai have made the exception for their own separate reasons...

Also, never recommend a series (in general) if no one is asking for one to begin with... I technically broke this rule while chatting with a friend via Steam... (I told him to check out the series Helix on Syfy...)

Do not use the words "*****", "whore", "dyke", "******", or "queer". ***** is a girl dog, dyke is a Scottish floodgate, faggots are still meatballs or bundles of sticks, and queer is a fancy word for weird. I have only broken this rule once. They are gender specific, and thus sexist.

Also do not laugh at people wearing kilts.

Also: don't kill insects outside, because outside is their home. If they come in my house - and insects are intelligent enough to understand that the enviroment is different and unsafe - they are fair game. They have been warned plenty of times.

I'm Dutch and can't stand music with Dutch lyrics. However there are maybe 2 or 3 artists that have made good songs.

I don't play racing games. End of story. That is...apart from my one exception. Need for speed Underground. I loved that when it first came out. Probably because of how over the top it could be.

One rule I try to uphold is that if somebody's unpleasant for whatever reason, to remind myself that they're like that for a reason they might not be able to control. Unfortunately some people are such vile human beings it's very easy for me to lose sight of this.

If I want to be general, pretty much this, I try to be objective, but that's a difficult thing to be, but I acknowledge this.

I don't have any real fixed rules as I understand that the world is not a flowchart. I'd actually sort of prefer if it was, but you need to be more flexible than that in life.

What "rules" I have are unyielding. OP is basically looking for "I like/don't like X but..."
To that end:

I don't like multiplayer shooters but killing sprees in Halo & CoD are fun.

I like fantasy RPGs but I don't care for Witcher or Dragon Age.

I wish there was more geek-centric television but I hate Community and Big Bang Theory.

I hate zombies but nothing I hate zombies

I think Valve will doom us all but I love Steam

I agree that George Lucas tarnished Star Wars but I like Phantom Menace

I don't like Microsoft but I regulatory play Xbox 360 games & run Windows 7

My only personal rule is that I don't make personal rules anymore.

When I look back at myself 10 years ago, while I wouldn't call myself dumb, I certainly knew less and have experienced less. I have changed a lot. I'm not in the same place as I was, both physically and mentally.
For example, I never thought that I would reach a point in which I'm more entertained by a guy talking about black holes for 3 hours than by a 200 million Hollywood blockbuster but it happened.
You tend to be happier and more successful if you adapt to the changes inside and around you, rather than if you set your principles in stone and dismiss everything that contradicts with them.

I guess that my only rule would be "always be prepared for changes" and I don't break it since it's always relevant.

Agreed. Life is change, and the principles we hold now will likely be very different 10 years from now.

My only personal "rule", more of a motto to be precise, is "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst", which is quite easy to follow considering my overall pessimistic look on life. I think it's unlikely to change, but what do I know, I can't see the future.

I have a personal rule regarding canon. As long as those in creative control say it's canon I'll generally accept it as such even if I don't particularly like it. The exception however is this new Dragon Ball Z movie. I refuse to even look at it. For me the Dragon Ball saga ended years ago and I will not accept any new additions esp. not anything as absurd as that movie sounds.
Also Metroid: Other M. I don't accept that as canon either.

You know that whole ?I disagree with your opinion, but I?ll defend your right to express it? thing? Yeah, that goes out of the window whenever I see or hear someone spouting racist, sexist, homophobic or transphobic bile. I have no time for people like that, and if I believe they?re wrong, I shall tell them.
