Hey I am currently working to become a personal trainer and I am looking to see what niche I can go into. I am a Geek (not smart enough to be a nerd) who is interested in Sci-fi, movies, computer games etc. Why I am posting here is I am wondering how many people here exercise regularly (and in what environment), also if you had a personal trainer who was good at his job but also able to talk about what interests you would this leave you more likely to use them.

Any feed back would be appreciated.

Thanks

I cycle to work every day, thats about it, since I only weigh 55kg and I'm 6ft. I'm pretty much a 2D cutout

I exercise once a week in the gym, about an hour and a half each. Mostly cardio with a few strength exercises. I might up that to twice or three times a week if I ever get my driver's license.

As for your question, yeah I'd like a personal trainer. Mainly one for guidance, of course, and to help me reach my health goals. If we liked the same things it'd be an added bonus, but it's way more important that he's good at his job. I'm not extremely talkative during exercise anyway. Plug in my MP3-player and go.

I started in the gym more than a year ago, and accomplished nothing.

Started with a personal trainer in Nov.

Since then, I've been in the gym 5 days a week; 30 min lift / 30 min cardio 3x week + 2 day spin per week. The results have been huge. This morning, I pulled my belt easily to the last hole. I was inching towards first hole for the last several years.

I walk to school and on 2 days walk back, however on Mondays and Tuesdays work for my dad's cafe which is a bit of work >.>
[sub]I'm walking way more than I did during my early school years which is a good thing.[/sub]

I also do simpler push-ups (as in on an angle) everyday to improve my posture and strength.

I currently participate in a martial art and some light sparring, and exercise both at home and in a gym environment. I prefer the home environment for the ability to just put my own music in the background without headphones, to watch things I want to watch, and I find it easier to use free-weights without feeling people are checking out how much you are lifting.
I prefer the gym for running though, since although the area I'm currently in has a nice little woodland around it, in winter it's just a pile of mud so running in it is out of the question. The gym is also quite good for motivating yourself to get into a pattern of exercise - it's harder to get distracted.

I'd like a personal trainer, but only because I'd like to know how to improve my routines and have someone to give me a kick up the arse when I forget. I'd easily substitute that for a gym-buddy to go with, however.

I currently do something called British Military Fitness two times a week, you can find them here: http://www.britmilfit.com/. I also play basketball twice a week for at least an hour.

I'm currently doing BMF as I'm not very keen on the gym environment - I've always been more interested in mastering my own body rather than using weights. Also BMF takes place in the outdoors with a group of people, so it's a lot more social and I find that element of comradery really helps me get to the next level.

I would like to have a personal trainer, but only during the winter (as it gets really cold to do exercises outside) or when I have an injury.

Hope that helped!

I tend to walk about two miles every day to and from the bus stop, usually around 5 mph. It's not much, but it keeps me from getting squishy. I'll also do the occasional bout of pushups, pullups, or weightlifting, but it's sporadic and probably doesn't contribute much to my overall health.

Never had a trainer, and never really felt the need for one. Generally if I think I need structured exercise for a while I take a PE course at the community college.

I hate gyms and working out with people (except for walking and running), but I'm lucky enough to have a weights set at home.

I work out properly a few times a week and do some lighter, simpler working out every other day. I go running quite frequently.

I personally don't feel the need for a personal trainer, but I'm certain many people do!

I try to go to the gym 5 times a week, but my ankle sprained again, and I slowly started going less and less. One time last week, none this week. I feel lazy now. Darn you weak ankles and video games!

I do a lot of squats, squat thrusts, push ups, pull ups, and other exercises I don't need weights for. And a couple times a week I lift weights. Every workout I put my martial arts into, practicing forms and doing a lot of bag work. I should probably run more, but I hate machines and my area is dreadfully boring and dangerously busy traffic wise.

Thanks everybody that offered some great insight. I didn't think the response would be so quick and helpful. Brilliant. A great help.

i lift weights every other day, unless college gets in the way. if i dont set aside time, i do so in long loading screens...

but i cant stand personal trainers or gyms. people being better than me at something i care about in real life pisses me off to no end. in games, i can learn from mistakes, adapt and get better... but in reality its not mistakes that are holding me back... just time or height (in this case) which i can do nothing about.
id either get put off altogether or hate everyone above me, and im sure that includes a personal trainer.
