In short, yes. I have a fairly expensive pair of Sennheiser ones and those have been the first expensive pair of headphones I've ever purchased. I've always just bought cheap, $20.00 sets and been happy, but once I started doing recording and needed better audio sound, I did some research and picked up a pair of these and the difference is like night and day. The money was definitely worth it.

Honestly? I use 5$ earbuds for the occasions I am outside, such as mowing the lawn or walking long distances and honestly they do just fine, even over the noise of a lawnmower/weed eater.

However if its for home use and specifically for gaming/film usage, the larger style have the capacity for simulated surround sound. If it is for that use then I can see paying 20$ or more for a pair.

But again just for every day outside use... a 2-5$ pair of earbuds will do essentially everything you would ever need it to.

I'm currently using zen creative earphones, decent sound quality. I have bad luck with earphones, I'm lucky if they last a couple of months so I begrudge paying for a top quality pair.

I think there are enough people to tell you so, but if you have ay appreciation for sounds or music... YES. Be careful what brand you buy as there are a lot of overpriced headphones on the market. My suggestion is to buy from a company like Shure, Sennheiser, Audio-Technica, or Panasonic. Either Audio specialists or companies that have been around a long time and making quality products for years.

I'd say getting an expensive pair of headphones (over your head) is better than a cheap pair of earphones (in your ear) sound is much better and much more comfort

Truth is, even most serious audiophiles can't tell the difference between high-end and mid-end headphones. Unless your job involves lots of serious audio work (Sound Engineer, Professional Musician...) or you're a really serious hobbyist, spending more then $60 on a pair of head phones is just stupid.

Also, I have never seen the big problem that audiophiles have with Skullcandys. They generally sound pretty damn good for a pair of $20 earbuds.
The earbuds are not SkullCandy's biggest sin. It's the over-ears that that are overpriced. The Skullcandy 'Skullcrusher' is the worst offender, since it's basically a $17 AOpen HP-590 with a new paint-job and a $65 price tag. Not even Apple could get away with that kind of mark up. When you buy Skullcandy, you're spending more on the 'fashionable' brand name then you're spending on the headphones. Since the brand name isn't quite as visible on the earbuds, they're more reasonably priced...

Me? I went through about ten different sets in all different styles over the course of about five years, but now I'm in love with my Coosh headphones [http://coosh.com/]. Cheap, great sound quality, portable, comfortable, and does a great job staying on my ears...

The main problem is that te price says nothing about the qualitiy of the headphones.
First of all: "big" headphones are usually better than small ones, the bigger membran allows them to have a range that little plugs can't reach.
Most of the headphones you can buy are just bad, no matter if it's a 7? ($or whatever) plug or a hundred and more for big ones. They usually have too much treble or way to much bass, because that's what people think would sounds good. Too many treble sound thin too much bass muds the sound (and your ears).
You should check the frequences, here an example of a Senheiser HD800. A linear line would be the optimum for a box, with headphones that's not quite the case, but close.

If you actually get a good pair, then they are definitely worth the investion.

V-moda used to make qualitiy in ear headphones. But they got way expensive and tend to break quick (cable issue)

On the whole I'd say yes, the more expensive "well made" headphones (ear buds or DJ style) are great, but personally I just buy the cheap 10 buck headphone ear buds because

A) I don't like the way the DJ style ones look (and living in Oakland it's SCREAMING "rob me")

and

B) I bought some expensive Skull Candy ear buds once and they broke within a month.

So yea, if you're hard on shit like I am then don't waste your money. If you're super delicate with them and have the disposable income, then go for it.
