I've lived on this Earth for 26 years (27 in less than a month). In all that time, there has been one movie that I've been told by just about everyone that I HAVE to see but have just never done it...until now.

That movie is The Princess Bridge

I went in expecting an OK movie at best, if for any other reason the age (the movie is 25 years old and a lot of movies from the 80's just don't age well for whatever reason). That was a pretty sweet movie and I am certainly glad I found it on Blu-Ray for $4 at Wal-Mart.

So, like everything that ever happens to me in life, this gave me an idea for a thread! What piece of media have you been told that you just HAVE to see/play/read/hear that you finally did. Did it live up to the hype? For bonus points, state your age and the age of the piece of content in question.

Arrested Development. It began in 2003 and was cancelled in 2006. I only got round to watching it earlier this year. There was quite the hype around it (some calling it one of the best comedies ever), but by god yes did it live up to it. I'm now one of those people recommending it as much as possible. Oh, and I'm 20, although I was 19 when watching it and the age of the content (as you can work out) was 6-9 years old.

Honestly, if you haven't watched it, DO IT!

I only got around to starting to watch Star Trek (starting with original series) last year. Just finished TNG a few weeks ago. :/

Ho man I saw that in its prime! It was funny as hell. Because of it I actually gave a few other Live-action comedies a chance (I've got a preference for animation).

I got into a lot of films around that time. The Terminator, Alien, The Godfather, Goodfellas, and many other classics.
I was 12-13-ish at the time.

I'm 21 now.

Lost.

Only watched it a couple of months ago.

It was one of those series that never really interested me but my wife is a massive fan of it. I got her the box set for her birthday earlier this year and a few months later she decided to make me watch it with her.

First 2 or 3 seasons were okay but then it got stupid as fuck .... but it had Michelle Rodriguez in it so it's forgiven.

Just saw The Princess Bride for the first time a few months ago. It was quite good, despite my misunderstanding of the focus (namely, that it was about an ensemble of characters, and not focused on Inigo Montoya).

OT:

2001: A Space Odyssey, AKA Three Hours of my Life I will Never get Back. Near as I can figure it, the movie was 53 years old and I was seventeen. I'm now eighteen. Saw it about a year ago at a local independent movie theatre (for free, actually, as part of a film series), and holy hell is that movie overrated.

I mean, it has some interesting ideas, but it's like Kubrick purposefully set out to make the narrative and themes shoot themselves in the foot every second step. Just when things are getting interesting, the setting or framing device is abandoned in favour of taking five of the longest minutes in cinema history to introduce a new one. Yes, Kubrick, I get that you're illustrating how calm and generally slow humanity has become in the movie's future and that you used long, slow, uneventful shots juxtaposed against classical music to convey this.

You know what else conveys that? Fuckin' acting. Y'know, from those actors that seem to be so important to movies?

Boardwalk Empire would do it for me. Hey, 2 years is a long time in terms of television :p. Even older would be Mafia films such as The Godfather.

I love that show, and I was really hoping it wouldn't be shit, and thankfully it's not.

OT: Firefly and I saw it waaaaaaaaay after it was cancelled.

I can't believe I missed out on it and dismissed it when it first came out. Thank God I came to my senses and realized how great a show it is and how awesome the movie is as well. :D

I first saw it on an ad on television last year, back when I still watched T.V. from the T.V. xD, and it looked really boring. Thankfully my tastes have changed and I have fallen in love with it. It starts off slow but goddamn is it a fine crime drama. Haven't finished Season 2 but I'm getting there!

I play video games long after they become new. So I never get to get involved in the conversations about a new game. I usually wait a long while to buy a game after its release.

Also I have decided recently I want to get into the TV show Dexter.

Well, "told" not really but I've had it in my mind to watch it for a while - Donnie Darko. Never really knew much about it - I read the premise (which is - "a rabbit tells Donnie that the world will end in less than a month". That's the entire premise I read), like last year, for the first time, been meaning to watch if from way before that. I can't give an adequate explanation why I didn't see the film until yesterday. Yeah, I literally watched it 24 hours ago - at this point in time, yesterday, I was about 2/3 or 3/4 in. Did it live up to the "hype" (OK, "expectations", I suppose") - it far surpassed them. I was expecting a somewhat disturbed movie with some dark themes interwoven in it, probably some minor mindscrew, too. I got more than I expected. In a good way.

Other than that, I've been told several times to try KOTOR 2. On this very forums. I believe it was Soviet Heavy that did it. I started playing it the day before. It is good. Quite good indeed. So far, at least - I'm not very far in, however, so I can't say if it lived up to anything or not.

CAPTCHA: i love you
No, go back in the friendzone, CAPTCHA!

EDIT: Also, I forgot: me - 23, Donnie Darko - 11, KOTOR 2 - 7.

The season that just finished up starts slow as well, but it gets really good towards the end.

I will say that series is not afraid of doing twists, and there are some really good ones that I don't want to ruin for you. :D

Most SNES games, really. I went the Segs route and got my awesome gaming there. So, for instance, I didn't play SUPER Bomberman but MEGA Bomberman, both of which are very good. Suffice to say, I took an old school route later...

Twists? I love twists! Especially when they're not spoiled for me xD. I was already spoiled of a certain character dying but hey, you can't have them all in this age of information.

I've been doing this with games since I started gaming (4 years old playing Mario bros in 1995).... I've played some of my favorite games close to half a decade after their release

Too many movies to even count- guess it's inevitable when a lot of great movies are well over 50 years old- mind you, some have aged horribly, but the one's that people still talk about and appreciate are often still pretty damn good- don't ignore the classics kids.
Game-wise, I just bought the Mass Effect trilogy- you can now buy all 3 in the one bundle.
The first Mass Effect does definitely feel a little dated, but was still pretty enjoyable.
I'm currently about a third of the way through the third game- I'm loving it so far, but I am dreading the ending, which I've nothing but bad things about.

Baulders Gate actually i really wanted to get into this my kind of game etc etc

But i couldn't :( unfortuntley it just felt to old and clunky to me and i couldn't get over the graphics, i really did try

I was also probably being retarded but i easily spent 20 minutes just dropping gear on the ground so someone else in my party could pick it up as i couldn't work out an easier way to do it :/

I recently watched Alien for the first time. It was pretty amazing, a few dodgy special effects aside.

A lot of anime
The problem with that is when you watch stuff people recommend there are a lot of people who tend to overstate how good something is and you end up disappointed.
I currently watch trigun and one of the main villains has been build up by my friend as one of the best ever and while he is deliciously sadistic his motivation is kinda lacking and I feel he just listened to way to much linkin park and hates humanity. Unless I missed something.

And consoles, I own a classic brickboy, various pcs and a ps3, I have never played any of those classic console games from the 90 unless they got a pc port
