Half Life has always been about bringing a compelling narrative to video games. There was a general suspicion that there was no way Half Life 2 would be able to follow in the original Half Life's footsteps. However, Half Life 2 not only did that, but it trumped it to a great extent.

Of course, the competition has had a lot more chance to catch now since when Half Life 2 was released, six years ago, so if you're not impressed compared to current day offerings than I'm hardly surprised.

Maybe if you're a really good observer you could notice that Half Life 2 next to a current day game fits right in and realize that this means HL2 was greatly ahead of its time.

If you don't appreciate Half-Life 2 at all, this is probably why [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SeinfeldIsUnfunny].

*feels like chirping in for no reason at all. note however that im in the middle of finals at college. So all typos need not be pointed out, I know they are there, Im just to dang lazy to fix `em*
ok sure things can feel repetitive and annoying at times. I wouldnt consider the game bad, but in the same breath, I wouldnt say good.
I got it when it first came out for Xbox. My friend just gave it to me when he upgraded to 360 (im always about 2-3 years behind on getting next gen consoles) And I thought it was fun. Years later I picked up the orange box for 360 relatively cheap and it was great to sort of rediscover the game. The game did a few original things that appealed to the gaming community
1: Physics engine. While valve has gone trigger happy with the havoc engine and admittedly over uses it, that doesnt mean its necessarily bad. Killing a man with a toilet..... nuff said...
2: character acting is definitely a good improvement.
3: no cut scenes and few time lapses.
4: the games at least attempts to keep things interesting by changing up the enemy situation every now and then. Ifrst its combine, then zombies, then ant lions, then more combine with bigger guns, then striders and gunships galore, and the fun little fiasco in the citadel with the gravity gun. This is more than can be said for alot of FPS games today. I have always had a unexplainable fondness for the original halo (perhapse Im just nostalgic) but it got old after a while. And the flood may have made you radically change your fighting style but it was too little, too late...

Anywasy..... Imma go pass out. PEACE! Merry Christmas!

a friend recently gifted me a copy of half life 2. this is great because i havent played it for years, and when i did i didn't think it was that amazing.

I actually remember it as one of the million fps games, quite bland and boring. but wow, do reviews tell another story. Obviously a good game is a work of art, and, as such different people will come away with different opinions, but its always difficult to understand why (what one perceives as) a lacklustre game gets rave reviews.

thanks
Because it was a fun game. I attacked nova prostekt like 9000 times. it never gets old for me. Ive never been scared of a scary movie before in my life, and Ravenholm scared the shit out of me, for no real reason. The sounds of a fast zombie makes me shit my pants scared. I cant place it, but that game had an affect on me that no other game ever had.

Half-Life 2 was decent. It might have been more entertaining if my copy wasnt messed up and let me die. I kid you not, my copy of the orange box makes me invulnerable in Half-life 2 and nothing else.

i still think episode 3 is just vaporware

While most games have there fair share of hitscans and parabolae, Half-Life 2 had PHYSICS to kill your enemies with. You've completely forgotten about the gravity gun.
