Simply put: People who use this term mean that the thing in question is getting more praise than it deserves, in their opinion.

As we all know, opinions differ. So what is overrated to one person, may not be to someone else.
As TopazFusion neatly put it. (Nice avatar by the way, it's mesmerizing)
Pfft. Eva really is overrated. This is true fax.

Also, thanks for giving me an excuse to use this.

The girl in my avatar knows she's awesome. ;)

Using common sense on the internet is overrated. Clearly arguing until the banhammer swings is better!

For me there are a few things I feel are overrated but I know this doesn't make it an objective fact.

I recently made a thread about MGS being overrated but that is just because a lot of people treat it like a second coming of christ. I still think that its a good game but to be all like "Hideo-san is a genius and the future of the gaming industry" is just wrong and sadly very commun on the internet.

So basicly is just when people praise it WAY too much (one thing is saying that its good, another thing is saying that is miles away from all the other games and that NOTHING will ever be as good)

This is one of the most overused words on the internet. It's been said about Half Life, Mario, and Doctor Who. Thing is, I dont think anyone uses it right.

As far as I can grasp, a piece of media is overrated if it's really popular, but the person talking about it didnt personally get into it. Though I'm fairly sure things get popular because they're well done, so overrated would be a weird way of putting it.

So what do you think overrated means? And use a game, show, or movie as an example.
Take for instance Bayonetta that game got 9/10's across the board for most sites, but in reality it should of only gotten a 7/10.

Basically if you say a game is a 10/10 and it's only a 7/10 your overrating it.

Everyone says it's awesome, but it's actually not.

That's the most basic description I can think of. Which of course means that you can't really come up with examples, because it's all subjective.

Like The Shawshank Redemption, which regularly gets voted as the best movie of all time, or at least top ten. Now for me it definitely is one of my favourite movies ever, but for someone deviant and weird, like that Daystar person, it might be their most hated movie.

I suppose the most objective you could be about it would be a work that can be conclusively proved to be substandard (I'd like to nominate Twilight) yet is still voted highly by critics (not the general public, who don't think critically.)

The problem with that phrase, that people are using it switching beween "it's too mainstream" and "to many people think that it's a masterpiece", while the two are usually contradictory.

Things that get REALLY famous in the mainstream, usually have such a huge hatedom, that pretty much anyone who is likely to be obsessing over a piece of entertainment's artistic merits, already thinks that is overrated. So with things like Halo, 50 Shades of Grey, Avatar, Evangelion, or Bleach, everyone thinks that they are rated too highly by everyone else, to the point that you literally only see them popping up in the context of how overrated they are, so they actually end up being overhated instead of overrated.

Things that an entire community regards highly, are usually cult classics that few people are familiar with, but many like to use as a synonym of quality. Things like Psychonauts, Cowboy Bebop, Citizen Kane, Catch 22, etc, are supposedly "overrated" only by a tiny elitist niche, where their supposed quality becames something of a meme.

Sometimes over rated has nothing to do with popularity or mainstream acceptance. Keep an eye out for promotional materials for new movies. Green Lantern and Pirates of the Carribean 500 both had massive card-board cutouts in most theaters, tons of trailers that played every 2 seconds on most stations and video sites, they had promotional phone apps that provided count downs to release and easy-share options from the movies' twitters/facebooks/etc, they were marketed with a direct relationship to how much those movies sucked. The studios knew they would be horrible so their only chance at making money was to overbill the hell out of them to get people in on opening day because day two would be too late.

Some times, over rating occurs to marketing, how many games promised the world and would release monthly updates with critics, bloggers, and developers praising previews and all the awesome features that will be in the game coming out two years from now, only to have you shatter the disc in a rage-fit because it was the worst game you've played?

To me it's when something is literally overrated; as in the critical acclaim is in my opinion way too high for what the actual product is.

Dragon Age 2, for instance has an 82 on metacritic ( http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/dragon-age-ii ). IMO, it's very overrated.

I also thing overrated is linked with something being overhyped. For instanced, I had people tell me for years that Full Metal Alchemist was an amazing anime. One of their favourites of all time, etc. When I finally saw it... meh.

Over rated just means that you don't feel that something lives up to it's popularity. When I say something is over rated, it's not because of a personal dislike; I am not a fan of Glee for example, but I don't think it's over rated because it's clearly a well made show (I just don't like it). Something that is over rated is something that doesn't deserve it's reputation because of it's poor quality; some things that are widely distributed and highly advertised become popular, but the product itself is low quality.

People can't accept that they have an equal minority opinion so they twist their perspective to make the people who do like it have the wrong opinion. That pretty much sums it up.

LOOK INTO MY EYES!

Ahem..

OT: Basically when people believe that something doesn't deserve the popularity/success it gets, it's just a matter of opinion :3

There's a difference between things being overrated and me just not liking things.

For instance: I don't like Star Fox games. That doesn't mean they're overrated because other people like them. It also doesn't mean they're bad games, I just don't like them.

Now, for an example of something that is overrated, Portal. I liked Portal. It was a fun little physics demo game. However, a disgustingly large amount of people act like Portal is the perfect game, the best game ever made, the Messiah to save the game industry from the tyranny of anything that is not Portal.

In that case, it is very overrated. There's a bit of difference.

The term "over-rated" is generally bullshit.

If you think about it, if a positive consensus is simply made up of individuals expressing their honest opinion about a game, then how can said game be possibly over-rated? People where honest, and it got the praise it deserves.

The only time something is over-rated is when a critic basically lies about it. Gladly, most critics don't resort to that any more; yes, even the ones who go by the 7-10 out of 10 rating systems. I think they've realised that people have caught on since the Driver 3 fiasco.

Sex.

Drugs

Rock and Roll.

There, three examples of "Overrated". Three things that are hyped up when in reality they aint that great. I mean, they are all "Good", "Fun", "Enjoyable" but whilst you are growing up they are sorta put on a pedestal of "OMG YOUR ENTIRE LIFE SHOULD REVOLVE AROUND THIS THING" but around about the 3rd person you have fucked and the 2nd bucket of cocaine and perhaps the first concert you have been to you realise that all three things, whilst perfectly ok, are not what you thought they would be when you were growing up.

So yeah. Overrated is something that someone has tried to convince you will be amazing wheras the reality is its just ok or pretty good. Like the aforementioned examples.
