So warhammer 40k just had its first free dlc come out, titled exterminatus. This is a horde mode similar to what gears did but with a few twists that make it very enjoyable.
The way exterminatus works is you fight 20 waves of enemies each stronger then the last with any build of items you have unlocked in the multi (I'm not sure if you get unlocks just with exterminatus or not since I've already unlocked almost everything).
The main difference between exterminatus and a normal horde type mode is that in exterminatus you dont stay on the same map for all 20 rounds, each 5 rounds you move to a new map and you can change your class and restock your ammo and grenades. In the 5 rounds you will fight hordes of orks with the objective of killing them all and also occasionally capping a point or getting a special mini quest to kill a certain number or kill a number in a certain way in a time limit or cap a point quickly. The levels also get much more love then Ive seen in most game modes of this type, in one level after capping a point, automated guns on the walls come to life and blast any orks nearby, in another roks drop from orbit and disgorge their cargo of orks all around the level.
So far I'm having allot of fun with the exterminatus game mode, relic certainly put some nice touches on it and even without dedicated servers it still plays well and without much lag even with the screen full of green meanies (yeah, I said it). It is very important to have the right balance of classes also, if you go too gun heavy then ammo will be a bit scarce, if your too melee then squigs could end up surprising you at bad times and shootas will pepper you from catwalks. Without a devastator its harder to hold the points when the cap a point objective comes up.
Relic has done a fantastic job of showing us something new with a rather common game type, and they put allot of work at making it as interesting as possible.
