External hardrive help

Hey there escapists any of you guys help me out with this problem I ahve. I have a external hardrive ,250g, and it registered as my G drive but past days it wouldnt pop up no matter how many times. Well just yesterday it poped up when i plugged in my ipod first then i plugged it up again and see if it works this day. so what happens is my cpu recognizes my ipod and assigns it the G drive and now my external hardrive pops up as H and it wont go back. Im gettn really frustrated with this, so help a fellow escapist out please.

FYI: I aint cpu savy so keep it simple if you will.

1. Your USB connection might be too weak to manage the external hard drive. That's happened to me. Is it plugged directly into your computer, or through a USB hub?

2. You can reassign which letter each drive has, but it might not do you any good if your computer keeps dropping your hard drive.

Is there anything important on the hard drive? If not, or if you can move it off, I'd try reformatting. (Bear in mind that will delete everything, so make sure to get everything you need off it first!)

I got steam with many games with it plus some other games and I have changed ports.
