It could be that the trilogy itself is a kind of meta-greek tragedy. We have a great first game, it goes on to become something that loses it's original flare in the second game because it was overdoing the stuff that made it good in the first place, and in the third game the series is reduced to blind pointless self destruction.

Or something like that.

I personally love GoW 1. I fell out of love with the series in GoW 2 & 3. While they're a lot of fun to shut your brain off and play, I personally think God of War 1 was a great stand-alone game. It's clear the new director just took one core piece of God of War and ran with it, not looking at everything there was about Kratos and what made him an amazing character to begin with.

I really like where this is going. I enjoyed this video a lot. Probably my second favorite so far.

It's nice to see someone who's not afraid to criticize God of War.
I agree with at least some of what you say, having to play through both the slaughter of Zeus and the drudge through Kratos' psyche.
In the end, I really like what you are all doing with these videos and hope you keep on giving.
See ya next thursday.

I understand what your getting at, but to be honest, I didnt notice a break in character, narrative, ect. at all, I was just having too much fun breaking faces.

I guess now that you've started me thinking, the message for GoW3 could be that violence doesnt solve anything, no matter how many people you kill or target your rage against, you'll still be left feeling hollow.....or indeed unsatisfied......running low on M&M's........with a controller in your hand......

I dont know, I tried to make some sense out of what I was saying, but I shall stop now before this pit gets any deeper.

You used the Picard "WTF is this shit?!" pic. Bonus points!

But yeah. Sounds to me like either

a) This was a forced trilogy where the first game standing on its own would've been enough to tell the story (but I'd be careful about making such judgements really. A ton of people might harp on and on about how the first Matrix movie, for instance, was enough but tbh...I can't imagine the Matrix without that final scene and how it resolves itself, nor without the second movie which I still think was the best of them all).

or b) Yeah...new director, new set of priorities, story isn't that high a priority and focusing on the character and on making the player feel omnipotent is top priority. Can't have things like morality or guilt bring the player down by the end, now, can we?

I agree with your points. I did enjoy GoW1 more for the storytelling then the other two. They just became the mindless slaughter houses I use to work off frustration rather then the compelling narratives I use to soothe my battered soul.

I admire your honesty and the brillient way you manage to get a point across at the same time as teaching us about things we honestly might not have known ot understood.

Excellent videos and I'm sure to be a huge fan over your stay here at the Escapist :)

Very insightful commentary about the similarities (or lack, thereof) in Greek tragedy and the God of War series. I hope to see more of these.

Something weird has happened this week, i just don't agree with any video posted on this site. Very strange.

First with Yahtzee slaging off a game i doubt he really played much by the sounds of it, and now this. But then, that might be because i love the God of War series for it's brutal violence and graphics. Call me shallow, but i did enjoy the story.

Maybe i can because i don't feel the need to over-analyse stuff. I played the game, and saw Kratos just go ape and destroy the world. But i rolled with it and very much enjoyed it.

The day i start to analyse everything to the point i can't enjoy anything is the day i'll throw myself off a cliff.
