James Portnow of Extra Credits fame recently announced via the shows twitter that they will be publishing indie games now.

Some of you may remember when Alison Theus - the artist of EC - ran afoul of some pretty awful shoulder problems and was looking at losing the function of her arm. Extra Credits rallied for donations and within hours of the Rocket Hub page going live they had smashed their $15,000 goal. To date they have raised over $85,000 which is way more than enough for Alison's care.

In response to the overwhelming generosity from the community the team have decided that they are going to use the surplus donations to start publishing. I won't bore you with any more of my own summaries. Go <url=http://www.rockethub.com/projects/2165-extra-credits/posts/740>here to the Rocket Hub page to read Portow's announcement.

I have to say, I'm pretty pleased with the news. I think the Extra Credits guys will make fantastic publishers. Being that this is necessarily only going to be small projects the impact will be small, but gradually quite important. All publishers start somewhere and I think games guided by the EC vision could be quite an asset to the industry.

I'm happy about this.

There's really no more to say. I think this is only good news for the industry.

This is really good news.

Not only do we easily cover Allison's surgery (although that was apparent within a few hours of it starting) but now we are going to have Extra Credits helping new ideas to flourish.

So everyone who donated basically helped in the creation of these games? Awesome. Cannot wait to see what they'll come up with.
EDIT: I really like the idea that the profit goes back into the fund. I think this couldwill get big.

This is great news! :D Thanks for posting it. It's good to know there will be another non-profit publishing agency out there distributing goods because of their quality. And they've got a good head start with the amount of people they can reach via Extra Credits.

James portnow would be the guy I'd hire as VP of my game developer/publishing firm (it would be both), so I'm happy about this. I think this is the studio that will represent us as gamers. As we truly are. And it will lead the way in real innovation that real gamers want. However, I am going to try to get portnow himself to start posting on here to ask us what we think of various games. No one improves without criticism, and who is more mostly neutral than us? Also, who is more nitpicky. Even nitpicky criticism can lead to better games.

Edit:Speaking of wizard I mean which, how much does one of those E3 conferences cost? I bet we could fund their appearance at the next expo.

Extra Credits Twitter: Also we'll probably need your help. We're going to all be donating as much time as possible, but we'll need a street team, website help...

I want to make this a community publisher and pull together to spend as much of the money on actual games rather than overhead as we can.

The donation page is still up, so I guess it's still possible to donate to this new cause.

This is going to be sweet. I can feel my thumbs and index fingers beginning to twitch in anticipation...Or maybe that's the huge amount of sugar I put on my weetabix; btw, not a normal thing, just doing it for the lulz.

I'm looking forward to seeing what they produce

yep, I donated to the new cause. Alison's surgery is still important but I think that's covered already.

A great idea from the EC team, I wonder if they had this in their future plans or if it was a sudden idea with the surplus money they got.

By putting there theories into actual games the rest of the industry will hopefully take notice and begin to apply fantastic ideas to big budget games too :) as long as we still get our Extra Credits each week

These guys are going to be huge. I don't know when or exactly what's going to happen, but these guys will be the Valve of indie gaming.

This will be totally awesome if it becomes huge. Even if it doesn't and this publishing deal sticks to the smaller indie games, it'll still be an excellent step forward.

I'm just worried that if this indeed becomes big, Extra Credits won't be able to support it under their current planned model. It can get ugly pretty quickly if things don't work out.

...Really? I hate to say it, but I'm not too optimistic about this, AKA I have a strong feeling that it's going to fail. Also, I prefer to keep corporations/organized groups and "We are making the industry a better place!" analyzers away from each other at all times. Admittedly, this is a far better use for all of that extra money than spending it on a jacuzzi, but this just seems a bit too...pretentious-ish.

i think this is absolutely awesome, and will be fantastic should they succeed. i'm worried though what would happen should Allison need further treatment in the future. With the cost of health care over that side of the world, she'll going have the same problem again if anything else happens.

My first thought when I heard this was "Maybe THEY can bring over Ace Attorney Investigations 2"

But of course I know that's incredibly unlikely lol

That is quite possibly the best thing that could happen to gaming. Really didn't see this coming. The Extra Credits team has earned even more of my respect as I doubt any other entity would make better use of surplus donations as they did.

I figured they would donate to Child's Play or something with the extra money.

But this is just as swell.

Hope it's something beautiful
