The original F.E.A.R. is now on steam for £6.99
I was just looking for some opinions on the game.
I've bought games off recomendations from random threads on here before, and been stung. It seems that people only speak out against games when there's a direct thread on it.

Basicly:
Is F.E.A.R. Bioshock level atmospheric? does it have a compelling story like Max Payne? Or is it broken rubbish with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. style difficulty?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT:
F.E.A.R. 2 is £9.99, but comes without the DLC, the first comes with it's DLC. Is that a better deal?

F.E.A.R is a mildly frightening game with great gunplay and lackluster level design.
Atmospheric? Eh, sure, it can be.

It's worth the price if you plan on playing multiplayer, which is admittedly quite fun.
Hell, it's worth the price regardless - I say go for it.

I was looking into getting F.E.A.R., the 3rd one looks pretty classy, and I figured I might give the first a go. Unfortunately my computer is a piece of expletive so I'll be getting it for the PS3.

Hmm... I'm not really interested in the multiplayer... It might sound shortsighted, but as far as multiplayer goes, if that's what I want to do, I already have L4D2, TF2, Borderlands, MW or UT:3... In fact, most of the time I haven't gotten round to playing those multiplayer (Other then TF2, I've only really played the rest in single player.)
Since my Mic broke, I've hardly bothered.

So is the single player strong enough?

The story is sub-par, and it's not afraid to rely on the old "shit just went down, now you're alone" angle. Which, admittedly, is a pathetic way to force isolation and, in turn, force fear.

That said, you'll want to see it through to the end, as it's finale is quite epic.

I quite liked the game, it was freaky at times although the main issue is that you have to actively seek out the story and have it told to you by listening to recordings. If you don't do that then you won't get much of the story from the game other than there's a girl that's scary or something and controls the enemies somehow. In hindsight this was a stupid method of delivering the story but I didn't mind at the time.

The scares are often same-y so it's best to play a chapter at a time or so because otherwise you soon become accustomed to how they are going to scare you.

I enjoyed it overall and for £6.99 with both expansion packs it's a steal.
