I rarely download updates. Unless I see an obvious bug (or hear of one) and go search for the update, I usually finish the game before realising it has an update.
I think I know what the OP is talking about when he mentions a time where updates weren't as frequent. 5-10 years ago it was unheard of for a game to require an update on the day of release. Then again, that may not be a good thing, since an update that fixes something six months after release means there was a bug for 6 months that went unfixed. On the other hand, if you found a bug before customers got their hands on the game, what were you doing during beta?
