A couple a days ago I beat The Darkness 2. At first, I was OK with the game. I enjoyed the singleplayer, despite playing on the Don difficulty my first go through. But something did really start to get a me the more I thought about. The ending really started to grind my gears. I don't know why, but cliffhangers usually make me think I just played the tutorial of a much better game. And it's not like I hated the game or anything. I actually think The Darkness 2 is better than the original by a landslide. So I guess I'm just asking if anyone else feels the same about this ending?

So yea. I hope I'm not going against any sort of community rules or anything with this, or that it makes anyone upset. I just kind of wanted to throw my opinion out there.

You'll find this happens a lot, in all kinds of media, including movies such as Pirates Of The Caribbean. A stand-alone game with an interesting new mechanic will be pitched. However, the story will be pretty much self-contained, with maybe a couple of sequel hooks left in, but nothing particularly overt. The story wraps itself up.

If it does well, then the investors will green-light a sequel. However, they know the money is now there, so why not make it a trilogy? So, in that regard, the second game/movie/book/whatever has its ending left as a cliffhanger, because unlike the first one, they know people are interested in the franchise, and will probably buy a third installment. Therefore it is safe to take that gamble and have the second installment left open to lead into the third, and also beneficial, as people are more likely to get the third installment and see the real ending.

You'll find a lot of second parts of a trilogy are merely a set-up to the final act. The Darkness is hardly the first to use this strategy, nor will it be the last.

Actually I didn't. I've been a visitor on this site for a good time now and just thought I actually sign up and see what the community is like here. I'll just take the link out, as I don't want anyone to feel like I'm advertising or anything.

I thought the ending was fine.

Yes, it sets up for another Darkness game. But if you hate this ending, I'd love to hear your opinion of worse offenders (I'm looking at you God of War and Assassin's Creed...)

Actually worst offender would be empire strikes back since it was nothing but plot hooks for the next movie XD

In terms of games assassins creed 2's ending basically broke the series for me, its just too stupid, i dont even wanna play any of the newer ones.

I actually felt cheated with the darkness 2 ending for a couple of reasons. First the first game had real depth and although a short ending it placed a cap on the story. This game even though it was more in depth had no real ending and like the post by RabidRetrospect it left me feeling like I was grinding my wheels for no reason. Now let's go over the story issues are you really going to try and sell me the fact that once she was free and became the opposite of the darkness she could just float out of hell(even though she is dead and therefore can't be a host) and the the Darkness that can create vortex's can't do the same and transport it and Johny out of there. Also the dialogue she says I must leave you here because you are too powerful and cause to much pain :p oh the big light being hates the guy who only kills evil mobsters and people who torture it. Even I will defend the game play as awesome but not that end in least in the second shorter ending where he admits he is mentally ill it gives him a shot at happiness and an ending that isn't so convoluted and cliffhangerish

Its really hard to explain and I will admit you have a right to be upset since like F3AR they threw in something in a sequel that went against the first game. Where in F3AR they put in multiplayer as an almost mandatory requirement to experience the content for a series that was single player, in this game they put in alot of the comic books story and so it feels both odd and empty for you since the orignal was very detached from its novel counterpart.
I read the comic series after i beat the first game and was thrilled with everything in it so when i saw the ending it was amazing and i got excited, and then I wondered why and its because i know what their building towards, or i think I do. If it bugs you that much, try the comic, if not, forget it and move on, Im certainly not going to condemn you for not wanting to spend money on a comic book series just to understand a bit about a games ending.

Like I've said, because I read the series I got the ending and the whole story made me really happy, not in a fan boy way<the comic isn't that great, infact i think the games version is better, though they should of kept the part of the curse where if he knocks some chick up he instantly dies, that always made for a cranky jackie> and i ended up feeling satisfaction when i reached the end like i Haven't felt from a ending since bioshock.

I actually really liked the ending. It was a pretty cool fake-out, giving us a "closure" ending and then following it up with the sequel hook. Plus, as a fan of the comics, I'm excited to see the direction the story seems to be heading.
