To start, I would like to apologize for the title...

Ok, so anyways last weekend after beating Fable 2 AGAIN, I couldn't shake this lingering feeling of dis-satisfaction. So, I decided for the first time in a couple of years, to crack open my copy of Fable: The Lost Chapters.

My niggling felling of unfulfillment instantly died, and dragged itself into a corner where It couldn't obscure the blinding white light gleaming from my television screen after putting in Fable. After only a few hours of play, I was gently grabbed by the hand and lead through an amazing world of interesting, and compelling characters, awesome weapons, challenging battles, awesome armor, and a moral choice system that had me torn the entire time.

If it isn't clear I liked the first Fable (The Lost Chapters tm) more than I liked Fable 2. I'm not saying that the first Fable didn't have alot of flaws, but even with them, it still burries, Fable 2 in a pile of shame and, and self-hatred, in comparison.

I think it's better because to start, your main character doesn't look like he just came from a labotomy, and actually looks cool. The first one was also a lot darker, and more immersive, and most of the characters (or at least the ones that were supposed to) actually endeared themselves to me. Whereas, in the second one I had to show restraint just not to kill them.

Back onto the subject of Fable 1 being darker, in the second one, I was constantly being pulled out of the immersion, by Peter's lingering presence throughout the game, with over-bearing humor.

I'll be listing a few other points later on in the thread, but the bottom line is: I think Fable: The Lost Chapters TM is much better than Fable 2...do you concur?

I DEFINATELY prefer Fable 1. the story is so much better, the world is a lot bigger etc etc. And in Fable 1 you get rewards for both being good and being bad (like where you choose between the Sword of Aeons and Avo's Tear), whereas in Fable 2 you don't get ANYTHING for being good, whereas you just sit there watching all the evil guys with their amazing weapons and armour, with mountains of money, not to mention they own freakin' Fairfax Castle. All the good guys get is respect from all the people I kill later anyway. In fact, you Fable 2 PUNISHES you for bein freakin' good. In the Spire if you refuse to kill your buddy the game steals all your abilities and experience that took you the whole time you played the frickin' game to get. And when you take the Dark Seal to those evil guys, if you choose the good thing the game makes you old and wrinkly, making it impossible to get a wife. God, I wanted to kill Reaver so badly. Not to mention him slagging you off in his diary.. I just smashed his house up after I finished the game. All the people in Fable 2 that you hate get away (except for Lucien of course) whereas all the people where you actually feel you like them end up dying, like that guy in the Spire, and your dog (when I chose the Love option he didn't even do what he was supposed to do anymore anyway, he just kept running towards the Homestead demon door, then I got to where he was dragging me, walked off and he carried on barking and chasing that frickin' empty house!)
Plus the Demon Doors were better in Fable 1. Sure, in fable 2 the demon doors' places look pretty cool, one of em even has a story to it. But the ones in fable 1 felt much more rewarding. Most of them'd give you a legendary weapon, where in fable 2 only one of them does.
Seriously, Lionhead failed.

I concur with everything that has been said in this thread so far.

On a related note, anyone want a copy of Fable 2 on the cheap?

In my opinion: The WHOLE Fable series is a complete joke. Just an empty void with uninteresting characters and unfulfilled promises from the developers. I definitely prefer the Elder Scrolls series.

eh,the armor rating system ruined fable 1 for me.No character was unique for long,no matter what you did or how you played basically everyone ended up in platemail by the end of the game and the only unique-ish-ness was what color you wore.that and that it was near impossible to be evil because you got good points for killing enemys.

Gotta say I preferred Fable 2. Felt like it had a properly done story while Fable 1's felt more like you just teleported about pointlessly until you teleported somewhere that was plot-relevant. The frescoed cutscenes were cool as heck tho.

I also preferred the purity/corruption-good/evil system to the good/evil line. Not to mention in Fable 2 there's a very clear "It's hard to be good" vibe, it makes no freaking sense in games when you have to go out of your way to be evil. The fact clothing had no effect on armour was nice, since it gave more variety than 'play card pairs at the start until you can afford plate, wear this until the end of the game'.

I REALLY wish Fable 2 had a mana bar for things like healing and shields, and that magic was blue while strength was red, like Fable 1's colour scheme (I get that melee was the blue x button and magic was the red b button, but magics always blue in games, and melee is always red!). Plus the fact the best weapon in the game was from a piss-easy shooting game 1/3 of the way through the story made it ridiculously easy, get the Red Dragon and sub targetting and everything can be killed in a second with 6 perfect head-shots.

YES. Fable was astronomically better than Fable 2. I rather regret spending thirty quid on my copy of Fable 2...
