I bought the game on the internet around a month ago and it arrived last wednesday. This gives an accurate view on the WHsmith delivery service. However I only spent ten pounds on it, so hey, a bargain that arrives late is still a bargain, right? I frst played the original Fable on my brothers Xbox quite some time ago and loved it. So when I heard that it had been transferred to PC I was all over it.
Fable is an RPG developed by Lionhead Studios, who created games like Black And White:
The Lionhead Studios symbol in the bottom right proves i'm right.
I've also played Black and White before and noticed that you can choose between being evil or good. Lionhead Studios seem to like this idea as it is also in Fable. Supposedly every action you take affects your alignment until you become a lovely little angel or a terrifying demon. To put this in pratical terms it means deciding between helping someone or shooting their heads off with your bow. To put that in modern terms its deciding between helping an old lady across the road or shoving her infront of an oncoming bus.
The game starts off with you as a chirpy farmboy skipping around doing good deeds for your father. Either that or smashing things and hitting little kids to get gold. Obviously that's the evil course of action. But then, predictably, a bunch of bandits run in and start killing anyone that glances in their general direction. At this point you are 'hiding' behind a fence, with most of your body in plain view, while the bandits set fire to your town and lifestyle. After this you cry over your dead dad, a wizard called maze teleports you to the 'Hero's guild' or something, you meet an old dude called the guildmaster and suddenly you're in bed asleep. After this you meet your overly competitive room mate/rival.
You then train at the guild, skipping chunks of your life, blah blah blah. Then all of a sudden you are let out of the guild to do what you want. Or thats what you beleive. The guildmaster gives you a guild seal and lets you know when someone wants you to do something. However when you actually get down to doing quests most of them are fun. There's no go over there and get me something then bring it back. The quests mainly involve killing something or everything you come across. There are a few notable quests. At one point I had to guide some traders through some woods, called Darkwood (someone needed to think up better names). The most annoying thing about this quest is the traders themselves. At one point I ran into battle swinging my large sword and starting smacking around a werewolf like creature. While the creature was busy ripping apart my face all the traders could do was cower and say "I knew we should have stuck to local trading". Another notable quest is The Arena. In The Arena you fight your way through hordes of creatures. It's like the highlight of the game, fighting loads of creatures without some NPC bleating in your ear, except the commentator but at least thats bearable. Also you get the chance to kill your erstwhile room-mate, who keeps calling you 'farm boy'. She was asking for it.
One of the selling points of this game, for people with absolutely no social life and a sexual attraction towards pixels, is that you can get married and ultimately have sex with people. If you continously flirt and give them stuff that is. It also has options for heterosexual or homosexual people, which is nice. But when you decide to take the evil path people tend to run away screaming when you get near, not fall in love with you. You can see their point though:
Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiii there.
See what I mean? Not the most attractive look. When your evil the only person that will marry you is the evil mayor. She killed her sister and later on in the game you can kill yours. A perfect coupling. There is even a whore house for the most desperate of pixel lovers. Not that you get to actually see it happen people. This isn't a pornography game.
A big thing in this game is magic. But to be honest ive never been a fan of it. Most of the spells you can get are pathetic till you level them up. The spell you start with produces a bolt of lightning, but to kill something you have to use your whole mana bar. It's that weak. But then on the other end of the scale you can buy a spell that enables you to do this:
Burnnnnn.
But then when you master that spell you can pretty much kill anything that stands near you.
Fable is ultimately a good game, but it has a few flaws in it. They don't ultimately cut down on the enjoyment of the game, but when the guildmaster keeps saying "Try to get your combat multiplier even higher" in the middle of you being slashed apart, it does get a little irritating. That being said, Fable is a fun game and I recommend it to RPG fans and pixel sex enthusiasts.
