Facebook Shuts Down Whopper Promotion

Burger King promotion [http://www.facebook.com/] that gave out a voucher for a free Whopper sandwich if users removed ten friends from their Facebook network, claiming the program violated user privacy.

To the ten Facebook friends I deleted last week in exchange for a free Whopper: I'm sorry. The promise of a free Whopper was too much to resist, and our Internet friendships were just not that important to me compared to a free taste of that char-broiled fast food delicacy. It wasn't just me either - more than 233,906 friends were removed last week by 82,771 people who did the same thing I did.

Of course, me coming to you and asking that we rekindle our Facebook friendship has nothing to do with the fact that Facebook just shut down Burger King's promotion and me not getting that free Whopper, no, of course not. "Whopper Sacrifice has been sacrificed," Burger King wrote. "Facebook has disabled Whopper Sacrifice after your love for the Whopper sandwich proved to be stronger than 233,906 friendships."

Apparently Facebook didn't approve of it, claiming that the fact that you guys got messages saying that you'd been sacrificed for a Whopper violated their privacy agreements. "We encourage creativity from developers and brands using Facebook Platform, but we also must ensure that applications follow users' expectations of privacy," Facebook said. "This application facilitated activity that ran counter to user privacy by notifying people when a user removes a friend. We have reached out to the developer with suggested solutions."

Fair enough. Even though I haven't talked to you, Steve Berkovich, in more than five years, I'm sure you were taken aback by the violation of your privacy that occurred when you got the message saying that I cared more about a burger than our meaningless online "friendship". Sure, Facebook could listen to what people like TechCrunch [http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/01/14/facebook-blows-a-whopper-of-an-opportunity/] are saying, that "there is no real privacy issue here, just a policy decision by Facebook that people shouldn't be notified when you remove them as a friend," but I apologize all the same. Even though I know that you all would have sacrificed me for a Whopper (but were probably too scared the deletion message would hurt my feelings) and that, if Facebook went back on this decision, I would sacrifice all of you for the burger all over again, let's all be Facebook friends again. I'm sorry the Whopper ever got between us in the first place.

I did not even know this existed
I would have sacrificed so many "friends" that are really people I've only talked to once.
Besides, whoppers are delicious.

That's awesome, wish I would have seen it. I totally would have ditched a few dozen to get me a whopper!

Wow. I'm glad I mentally sent Facebook down to the 14th level of Hell to burn with Hitler and JRPGs a long time ago.

Now I have plenty of friends I'd be willing to lose, but not for a Whopper. Or a Big Mac for that matter.

Nope. And Yahtzee has my back on this so I can say it to whoever I want without fear of retaliation. Well, without too much fear...

Wow, I never knew about that.
I don't think I lost any friends, I don't care much for Facebook anyway.

Yeah this is the first I've ever seen of this promotion, and now I'm too late! I would have gladly sacrificed "friends" for free food. Nothing beats a free grease patty.

I'm pretty sure most of the people I converse with on Facebook would have done the same, too. Personally, I only have people on there who I actually know and intend to talk to again, but a lot of my friends just add everyone they've ever met (and a lot of people they haven't), as if they're working to up their post count or something. I've seen plenty of people with nearly 1,000 "friends".

Oops, got off topic. Short version : Whopper > internet friends. Especially if it's that new Whopper with fried onions and jalapenos. *salivates*

Yeah, it seems funny to see some people who have to add everyone they went to high school with, even if they never, ever spoke to them during their time in school. For me, I only add people that I know personally, and talk to on a regular basis.

Don't even get me started on that new whopper. I've always loved the whopper and prefered it as a fast food burger, but that one just looks over the top and I must have one. If I wasn't making orange chicken tonight, I would go get one ASAP!

I don't like Whoppers, but I really respected that application when I saw it. Pretty creative use of modern culture and technology for their own ends. Plus, it's voluntary and fun. Too bad it closed down.

Well there's another example to put on my 'Humanity is Still a Bunch of Primal-Instinct-Slavering Peons' list.
