Facebook. What is it really for?

I use facebook to keep in touch with my high school friends (the ones I actually care about) and to keep track of the activities of somw of my favourite bands and even to organize events. Just last Wednesday I attended a surprise paty for one of my friends and all that was organized entirely through Facebook.
There's a lot of crap about Facebook, but saying it serves no practical purpose is a stretch. It's great for communicating, but most of the negative things mentioned in this thread are also true.

Depends on how you use it.
If you're an eejit you'll have 500 friends cluttering up your news feed and it'll be full of spam, drama and nothing of much import.
I have under 40 friends, and I use it to keep in touch with people I knew at university who I don't see anymore, people back home in Norwich who I only see every four or five months, and organise and arrange my gigs in Belfast, as well as letting people in the city know where and when they are.
Use Facebook responsibly and it can be a really useful tool, it's mostly people who let it get out of hand who end upnot enjoying.

OT: I hit "like" on the pages of bands/artists and games/developers i actually do like and get news from them that way. Also i just share random crap and use it to see what my high school friends are now up to. And it's great for organizing an event as people have mentioned.

Also hate people who use hashtags on facebook. Also, it gives me immense pleasure to respond things with facts on emotional statusses that don't make sense.

I pretty much only use it to share bits of code with the rest of my programming class. That, and sending messages to my Dad without using any phone credit.
I use it as my own personal forum of sorts. It's nice to be able to post a status update asking for opinions, advice, etc. on topics I'm interested in. I also use it to show people videos of stuff that I've done that is awesome (ie: radio shows I've hosted, martial arts competitions, etc.). That, and it's pretty much my sole method of communication for everyone I don't see at work or the gym, seeing as how 99% of the time, everyone else lives too far away or has work schedules that conflict with mine.

Also, blaming facebook for people posting mundane status updates and other stupid shit is like blaming violent video games for stupid people playing them and committing violent crimes. Oh, and facebook is an excellent tool for police to use to hunt down stupid criminals. I heard this news story where some dumb criminal posted that he thought he was going to get away with some crime on someone else's wall. I use it for work. Two of the websites I work for use facebook as our staff room for everything site related.
See ... I can stay in contact with people via phone, email and twitter. Why on Earth would I use Facebook, a pile of steaming bullshit with advertisements on the best odor to make that steaming pile of bullshit smell better.
Seriously, I have yet to see an advantage of Facebook that outweighs the privacy issues, pretentiousness and retardism of people there.
