It's another medium through which you can communicate with friends, family, acquaintances, etc. If you're sick of people posting crap on facebook, defriend them. You control whose posts you see.
And we are done here.

Well almost

also a decent way of sorting out stuff for an event, such as a large group of people going to a festival for example

So yeah, we're done.

My facebooks uses: Message people I dont have numbers for or who dont have credit, or asking for help on maths problems.
And about once a year being invited to an event.

I use facebook to keep in touch with my high school friends (the ones I actually care about) and to keep track of the activities of somw of my favourite bands and even to organize events. Just last Wednesday I attended a surprise paty for one of my friends and all that was organized entirely through Facebook.

There's a lot of crap about Facebook, but saying it serves no practical purpose is a stretch. It's great for communicating, but most of the negative things mentioned in this thread are also true.

Voilà.
Seriously though: It's just another communication medium. Why it blew up however...

Depends on how you use it.

If you're an eejit you'll have 500 friends cluttering up your news feed and it'll be full of spam, drama and nothing of much import.

I have under 40 friends, and I use it to keep in touch with people I knew at university who I don't see anymore, people back home in Norwich who I only see every four or five months, and organise and arrange my gigs in Belfast, as well as letting people in the city know where and when they are.

Use Facebook responsibly and it can be a really useful tool, it's mostly people who let it get out of hand who end upnot enjoying.

It's advertised as a way to keep in touch with friends and family. But what it really is, is a privacy invading machine for companies to see what you do in your off hours when you are job hunting and advertisers to spam you with shit.

Well personally it's the organising events, sharing links etc. Admittedly I could do it via email (lol) but facebook is just easier. Plus it's quite nice to see what my friends are up to.

Oh, wait, thats the entire rest of the internet...
With what Jack Whitehall refered to as "the revenge wank" i guess you could use FB for that as well >_>

OT: I hit "like" on the pages of bands/artists and games/developers i actually do like and get news from them that way. Also i just share random crap and use it to see what my high school friends are now up to. And it's great for organizing an event as people have mentioned.

Facebook, Uh, What is it good for ? Absolutely Nothing ! Say it again, Facebook, Uh, What is it good for ? Absolutely Nothing !

I take yearly trips to Poland for sportrelated reasons and it's easier to stay in touch that way. I hate people who post everything they do on facebook like "having a cookie". Also hate people who use hashtags on facebook. Also, it gives me immense pleasure to respond things with facts on emotional statusses that don't make sense.

I am not the Facebook User the facebook community deserve.

I am the Facebook Use the facebook community needs.

I pretty much only use it to share bits of code with the rest of my programming class. That, and sending messages to my Dad without using any phone credit.

I use it as my own personal forum of sorts. It's nice to be able to post a status update asking for opinions, advice, etc. on topics I'm interested in. I also use it to show people videos of stuff that I've done that is awesome (ie: radio shows I've hosted, martial arts competitions, etc.). That, and it's pretty much my sole method of communication for everyone I don't see at work or the gym, seeing as how 99% of the time, everyone else lives too far away or has work schedules that conflict with mine.

Pretty much this. Also, blaming facebook for people posting mundane status updates and other stupid shit is like blaming violent video games for stupid people playing them and committing violent crimes. Oh, and facebook is an excellent tool for police to use to hunt down stupid criminals. I heard this news story where some dumb criminal posted that he thought he was going to get away with some crime on someone else's wall. Some anonymous third party showed that post to the police, who hauled the sucker's ass off to jail.

It's social technology to turn today's young people into addicts. Just another screen for the mindlesss drones with no imagination to stare at. When it comes time to really know something, US kids place 17th alongside 34 other countries in science.

All the smart phones, apps and social technology are making the kids dumber than a box of rocks. There's nothing intelligent about that technology, it's screens with bright, colorful buttons to push. Pretty sure a chimp could figure it out.

See ... I can stay in contact with people via phone, email and twitter. Why on Earth would I use Facebook, a pile of steaming bullshit with advertisements on the best odor to make that steaming pile of bullshit smell better.

Seriously, I have yet to see an advantage of Facebook that outweighs the privacy issues, pretentiousness and retardism of people there.

Might be due to the fact that I consider everyone an idiot until proven otherwise, though ... Oh well ...

To read stupid bimbo statuses and laugh at how stupid and self centred they are.

Oh and to communicate over the internet with several people at once through instant messaging or through status updates, that too.

A handy ego-shrine to promote yourself in the best way possible. It's a good way to pretend you're the most interesting person possible and everything you do is pure gold. And a bit of messaging, that too.
