You have a misaligned view of what privacy is, its not withholding absolutely all information about yourself its about keeping private that which you wish to keep private. Facebook is lousy with people spewing their every inconsequential thought and deed onto it's pages, but they are inconsequential. The vast majority of users understand that anything you put on your profile is up for grabs and self-regulate accordingly.
We do know this now certainly. Did we when the privacy policy said differently back when we first started using it? No, of course we didn't. There was a privacy policy.

When we set our privacy settings to maximum, is it unreasonable for us to expect that setting to stick? No, it isn't. Is it unreasonable for us to expect that what we've set as private, is private? No, it isn't.

Ultimately, this is what gets up people's noses about Facebook messing about: The constant changes of privacy policy, the dishonestly and the base greed of a company that is already making millions (billions?) every year, and is trying to make more by screwing over it's customers, and which then does it's level best to stop you from opting out.

Yes I know. As someone said earlier, 'we aren't the customers, we are the product'. Well fine. Just a pity no one realised or admitted that way back when it started integrating itself into our lives.

I quit facebook over two years ago. The only regret I have is a game called GeoChallenge.

Delete system 32. It gets rid of it.

But srsly, it isn't a stupid move if thousands of people join the site every hour.

I've had it for ages, a few months now, and it's pretty ick. It's not that easy to find stuff, the two-column layout is a little confusing and it's rather disorientating. Also, the header picture is just a useless waste of space.

I'm sorry but... what?

I honestly have no idea how to reply to this because you've genuinely confused me as to how you took a conversation exchanging view points on a widely used serviced and turned it into... whatever that was.

Did you even read what I said or did you just read "facebook did something silly" and "facebook has privacy issues" then just glaze over the rest?

I'm not really sure why you're being so hostile but you really need to chill out friend =/.
Post was not directed at you, it was aimed at the suckers pitching in with "Facebook is a virus" type comments. Try not to take it personally.

Ah I do apologise.
My general experience with these forums is stuff with no real aim is usually aimed at the OP.
Again my sincerest apologies.

It's no more allowing someone to stalk an entire profile history than the old profile did. It was all there, you just had to scroll down and load "older posts" for a bit. It could be done all the way back to their first ever post. Privacy is no more endangered with this as it was before.

It finally looks like it was made by professionals rather than a 12 year old with some divs and "CSS for Dummies".

When I first found out about timeline I immediately got it since it's one of the nicest appearing updates to Facebook since I made an account, and I immediately predicted the usual onslaught of people hyperventilating, knees jerking wildly in all directions and muffled shouts of "I don't like change!"

The changes are purely cosmetic, fair enough you don't like it, that's an opinion I'm sure many will share. Just don't try justifying this with false security claims and baseless hysteria.

First of all I'm not shocked about this since I saw the video when he first announced it long ago =P I was merely asking for peoples opinions on the new layout while also expressing my own opinion on the matter.

Secondly you have a very good point don't get me wrong, anybody who looks into facebook beyond just using it can see just how messed up it is, but we keep using it because it's convenient at the end of the day.
That being said this change might be enough of an inconvenience to make it not worth having an account any more, at least for me.

I personally don't use my real name on FB or upload any updates I wouldn't want a stranger to see, but I know a lot who do and that's where the problem lies.
So yeah, my concerns about privacy are more about the bigger picture, rather than my own privacy.
Well, even if we ignore the hilarious rape of privacy that goes on at Facebook HQ (all while they cling to their own privacy and freak out if anything is leaked), as far as inconvenience goes their product has continually been worsened. That is to say, every new update they do further inconveniences the user in order to make it easier for the advertisers to data mine. All of these things which the majority hate, but because the user has grown so accustomed to using Facebook, the majority accept.

You just have to ask yourself if there ever will be a 'last straw', because so far no one gives a damn about their privacy being ripped off wholesale by a guy who thinks it's hilarious that people trust him.

As far as your own personal privacy goes, unless everyone you know references you by your fake name, your data has already been leaked. Hell, Facebook's been teasing at using secondhand data like that to create accounts for people so it'd be "easier" for them to join.

So, y'know, instead of people continuing to use IM, e-mail, texting, phone calls, in-game services, steam, and so on, people started using Facebook. Now, people can't figure out how to survive without it. All I can do is laugh, because Facebook has never, ever looked like an appealing service to me, and it continues to shit on its users while they stand there with a tiny umbrella wondering how much shit they can take.

I dunno if I should feel saddened or not by that.

This new update makes me seriously consider rebooting my facebook account. I have way too much crap liked and too many photos.

You don't have to do it yet so I'm not going to give in!
You were given a choice? It got forced onto me >_<
Personally this update has made me seriously consider deleting my account, they were already treading on thin ice with the whole privacy business
Treading on thin ice? Someone in the US probably knows everything about me :p.
Just in case you didn't know this, there are plenty of companies out there with all your information. This has been going on since before Facebook.

True, but wouldn't facebook be the most efficient at doing this? They're a very a big company after all.

I'm not sure about efficiency, but I'm positive the whole premise of Facebook stealing your data is overblown just because the site is so popular.

Interwebz protip: Never post anything on the internet that you don't want the world to know.

OT: I've actually looked forward to this timeline thing. It looks very interesting to me.
