now i know there are a ton of fads out in society (bell-bottoms, 3D movies, vampires, those loose shirts that make girls look pregnant). but im just here to talk about fads in video games (3D, motion controls, zombies, Russians antagonists). so tell me what some fads are that you've recognized in games (past or present), what you think of them, and what you think of fads previous people have posted (starting with me).

from my understanding, 3D started with the fact that many people are getting home entertainment systems that rival movie theaters. those the theater business had to think of some way to get people to keep coming back (i would have thought seeing a movie 6 months before its on dvd was enough). so they brought 3D back and charged more for it, and then games wanted to do it to. i dont think of 3D as that big a deal and im sure its on its way out within the year (for movies) but i suspect that as motion controls die, 3D will come into video games to pick up the slack :(

which brings me to motion controls. interesting idea Nintendo, but so far no developer has done it right, to my knowledge. the DS worked out well and i think motion controls should have stop there. as for sony and microsoft... godammit guys, really? i can only hope that Move and Natal (yes Natal, i refuse to recognize the horrendous spelling mistake that is Kinect... (although i said the same thing about the Revolution for those of you who remember it)) fail so hard that those two 'hardcore' gaming companies realize the mistake and get back to the real innovation of this console generation (DLC and online stuff).

zombies. they remind of of the vampire fad that is slowly dying in the movie/tv industry right now. over-saturation is the best word to describe the two things. yes, L4D and dead rising were fun, but Nazi/Commie Zombies and Undead Nightmare? seriously its getting old.

old like the Soviet Union! (zing) i think it was Yahtzee in Zero Punctuation who said it the best, America is looking for a fight. granted using nukes would be very bad (we still have enough to kill all life on Earth 10+ times), but you know, just a good old fashion war with guns would be good. or we could to a david and goliath thing, where each country sends their best company of soldiers to duke it out in a wasteland that no one cares about (Sahara or Antarctica). granted i know some countries would be sore losers but if we had enough other countries backing the idea, then any country that loses and doesnt accept the consequences gets gang raped by the rest of the world.

ok that was really off topic, my point was Russians are getting old, so could the game developers should a little imagination and get some new bad guys please?

I did some research after watching the Extra Credits video series and have gained a new sympathy for developers and publishers alike when it comes to game making. It is hard for a game company to take risks on original IPs or something of that effect because of the cost it takes to produce a single game; publishers will stick to funding games that include a plethora of mechanics that have been proven popular. You should understand the enormous pressure game developers and publishers are under not to throw away loads of money.

3D is interesting, although I don't like the oil like sheen that the image takes on. I'm sure they'll eventually get it right, and from the sounds of it racing games are ones that'll benefit from it a lot. FPS should as well.

The problem with motion controls is the attempt to have 1:1 action. Wii Sports sucked, and Sports Champions despite the Move improvements was just as bad. The problem is the game type, not the concept. Even the rail shooter mini game in Raving Rabbids shows how great being able to point is for an FPS game. Sadly, Nintendo decided to be retarded and only release Metroid Prime Trilogy as a limited edition, so most people who want it can't get their hands on it and it just never took off on the Wii. Had they really capitalised on it, the Wii could have carved out a niche among hardcore FPS fans. Fortunately, SOCOM 4 and Killzone 3 show that on the PS3 the Move for FPS games is being taken seriously, and I'm quite looking forward to getting the advantages of an analog stick for movement, sitting on the couch for convenience, and using a pointer for aiming and shooting. It's not a fad, it's just that it hasn't been figured out well enough yet.

AI is stupid, so are zombies. With current AI, you can have realistic zombies, but not realistic people. As programming gets better and technology improves, I don't think zombies will be as convenient, so it's the most likely to be a fad.

Man, I'm sick of Zombie add ons.

It was fun at first, but when they did it to Red Dead Redemption, a game which I loved for its story and mature tone, it made me sad.

Alpha Protocol was more mature than that game, and AP was immature as hell.

Seriously though, remember Seth? Or Irish?

Grrr... I remember Irish. He pissed me off not because he was an unimaginative cliche of my countrymen, but because his accent was fucking terrible and didn't sounded about as Irish as a sixth grade musical of Darby O'Gill and the Little People.

Erm... O'Gill?

Anyway, you probably see where I'm going there, RDR is about as mature as GTA IV, maybe even less so.

Oh, and OT: Probably overpriced map packs, I dunno.

The only fad in gaming that really irritates me is how 'retro' gaming has become so fashionable and popular that companies will stagnate or even regress just to appease the people who genuinely believe that Mega Man 2 is a better game than Vanquish. Thankfully, though, Nintendo handles most of this, so the companies that aren't pathetic laughingstocks can focus on progression, which is important for a medium as young as this one.
Wait what?
