Deus Ex: Invisible War - the first game was just a really tough act to follow

Far Cry 2- absolutely nothing to do with Far Cry except the name

Not bad games, just bad sequels

I would say that Civilization 4 was a failed sequel. It just couldn't match up to Civilization II.
Corrected.
Civ4 BTS is by far the best of the series.

Civ3 is broken by conquest culture flipping and tax/science farms. Civ2 doesn't even approach any semblance of balance (spies, bribes, senate and unfortified stacks).

The only sequel that did more improving on its predecessor was Half-life 2, cause, lets face it, HL2 was amazing, and Half Life 1, was not, at all. I can still bear to play Ocarina of time, but Half-life is eye-gougingly awful to my current-gen standards.
What's so bad about it? Not flaming, just curious.

Resistance 2, Resistance 2 and Resistance 2.

OH! Also Resistance 2. As well as Resistance 2.

Did I mention Resistance 2?
Ha! Good one. We all know the Resistance franchise was canned after the original and Retribution. Resistance 2 was never made. Haha. You're a funny one.

No one's going to mention Spyro? Okay, I will. Everything after Year of the Dragon killed the series.

Also, NWN2 was a piece of steaming s**t. I loved the first one so much and I couldn't even get through half of the second :(((
As soon as Spyro hit the PS2 it completely and utterly died for me.

Resident Evil 5. Not exactly terrible; however, all it did differently was a real-time version of the original inventory, an AI partner, and suspiciously quickly released DLC for a versus mode. Overall, I think RE4 is the better game. I'm also tempted to put RE3 here (imho, RE2 was the best in the series before they shifted to "Action Horror"), but Nemesis itself kicks ass, so the game is spared

I may end up getting some hate mail for this one, but...Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
The game fixed the combat and had a larger world, but Morrowind...I don't know, I missed the culture clash in the island, I missed having a lot more factions to join (and there being a point to being a vampire), I missed the random legendary items stored around the place (Dragon's Cuirass...was there any ingame clue to go to that island?). Don't get me wrong, I love Oblivion, but Morrowind is one of my favorite games EVER

Fable II and KOTOR II are pretty much the worst sequels in my eyes. Fable II was just such a let down, and I loved the first one so much, I kinda hate Lionhead now just because of it. The game was such a let down to me, especially considering their pretty good track record with Black and White, the first Fable, and even before that Dungeon Keeper 1 and 2. KOTOR II was just so unfinished and clunky, not a single person could say it was actually a good sequel. Had a couple of good ideas but was thrown out when it was like 70% completed leading to my personal, most hated ending in a game ever, award.

Obviously Baldur's Gate 2...

Ok, I'm kidding.

On a more serious note, Gran Turismo 3. I loved GT2 and played it to bits, but despite the massive leap in graphics I felt that it just didn't have quite the same appeal. For a start they seemed to have done something with the camera angles that I've never been able to quite put my finger on but somehow made driving more difficult and less satisfying. More importantly, part of the fun of the second game, for me at least, was taking a terrible car like a Daihatsu Move and turning into a litle beast. It allowed cars to have some personality that was sadly missing from the sequel.
