Failing a Halo: Reach Daily Challenge

Today (10-12-10) I was playing Halo: Reach and working on the daily challenges. While playing the campaign, I died and it said that I failed the challenge "Return Of The Mack". The description of the challenge is Kill 50 Elites in Campaign today on Normal or harder. After it says that I failed it, I had to exit campaign and start a new level in order to have access to the challenge again. This is the first time that I have ever failed a challenge on Halo: Reach, and I'm not quite sure why. Has this happened to anyone else or does anyone know why this would have happened?

Some challenges specifically state that you must not die while doing something. Like go through a Firefight game without dying.
I haven't been on Halo: Reach in a while, though >.>
And yes, I kept failing, because my best friend is a repeatedly "Accidental" team killer.
So I accidentally kill him/boot his ass eventually.

My first failed Reach challenge was the first time that damned 'Grenade Challenge' reared it's ugly head.

It was something like 8 grenade kills in one match. I raged so hard all day and night...

The description doesn't say anything about a cause for failure, and since it's in the campaign it doesn't reset every level

I've never failed any challenges, but then again I only do the ones that are "Earn X amount of kill in X mode today", because they tend to have the best rewards.

Anyone remember the Daily Challenge where you had to complete three straight rounds of Firefight without dying? Bungie had to change it because, if you notice, firefight online only lasts one round no matter the game type.

You don't fail it, it still counts towards your challenge progress from what I can see. I can't be arsed to get that one today, even if it is 3000 credits. It's just too much time and effort.

That last statement is a bit hypocritical of me, as I am a Lieutenant Colonel Grade 3 in the game. I have done enough since then to get to Commander, now just waiting for the level cap update.

I think it's a glitch. Same thing happened to my brother - one of those big lizard tusk monsters had him on Nightfall, and it said he failed.

I failed one campaign challenge but it is possible to redo, simply go to the menu select a different mission, then reselect the mission it asks you to do.

You're probably right, I just now finished it by restarting The second mission over and over.

It just means you need to quit and then restart the level to get it. I think they did it to stop people using the Sword base method to get it.

This happened to me too, I guess maybe you have to do it without dying. I didn't bother that is a mission.

Yeah it happened to me too, but it's just so you don't go to restart at last checkpoint when you reach a group of elites.

that is a ridiculous challenge, i had gotten so close so many times, i got 7 literally 4 matches in a row, getting 8 kills you easily have to be on elite slayer i would say. or have a grenade/melee only match somehow.

I failed the "Legendary Friends" challenge when my internet cut out in the middle of a match. Damned Comcast service has been messed up in my area.

I failed just last night, trying to beat a round of firefight without dying. I figured it would be easy if I do it on Gruntpocalypse, I've done it before. On courtyard, Final wave, ~7 kills from the end of the game, I'm on the ramp at the leftmost end of the map. The game spawns a fuel rod grunt around the corner, and although I managed to kill it, it shot me and I failed.
Not cool, Bungie. Not cool at all.
Why did you give grunts fuel rod cannons? Why are they instant kills? sigh.

On a semi-related note, does anyone else wish they could choose their own difficulty for firefight matchmaking?
