I feel terrible right now. My first semester of first year university has ended, and I checked my grades. I had only four classes this semester, and I failed one of them. This put my grade average at 54, below the required 60.

I'm scared, because I haven't received any emails telling me not to come back, but I also haven't received anything giving me a warning either. I want to keep going to school, but if I keep fucking up like this, I won't get the chance.

What should I do? I really don't know where to start. I sent the university a message asking them what they could tell me, but I won't hear back for a few days.

Is there anyway you can repeat one of the modules? Or even the semester?

I doubt they're going to just e-mail you telling you not to come back. There's usually other alternatives to compensate for a mark below the requirement.

If you're failing your first semester, how do you plan on tackling upper level classes? It takes some serious effort to fail most intro courses.

I'm guessing that I'll be on academic probation until I can get my marks back up. But the scary thing is that my brother received an email telling him not to go back to school because he'd karked up his grades too.

In my uni I know that if you failed an assignment then they just made you resit it. The general way it is dealt with is that you have to resubmit the thing, it'll get marked, and if it is above the accepted standard then everythings hunky dory, but you only recieve what the minimum pass mark was for that assignment, so the reduced score is your punishment.

University isn't like school, you are expected. No... required to do your own research, and (unless you are doing a mathematically based course) the information the lecturers give you are more like guidelines for further study than fully fledged notes. They are not enough to pass, you need to gather more and expand on their learning.
Take this fail as a warning, you don't want to be back in this situation again. Every man and his dog is coming out with a university degree, if you want yours to actually be worth the money and time you spent on it then work your ass off to make it a good degree!

Sincerely, an ex-student, Bsc, Msc... unemployed.
