Being from Scotland, one of the many origin places of the " historically original ones" most are nasty lil kobold that wreak havoc when disturbed, and renouned for abducting children and replacing them with changelings... though they come in alot of different types, most are pretty creepy, only ones not so creepish would be closer to what would be considered elves..

a good example of how they are originally depicted can be seen on torchwood.

the overy pretty winged things are actually a pretty modern spin to them.

They're what Twilight tries to pass off as vampires. You know, minus the antlers.

Given that I just finished Wizardry 8, most fairies are small creatures that fly around and try to kill you. Most of them can be whacked to death with a rolled-up magazine (or a fireball, whichever is more convenient), but the endgame ones require several applications (and they cast instant death style spells).

Mythologically, the fae are rather freaky and inscrutable. I'd rather not run into any.

Elves are wonderful. They provoke wonder.
Elves are marvellous. They cause marvels.
Elves are fantastic. They create fantasies.
Elves are glamorous. They project glamour.
Elves are enchanting. They weave enchantment.
Elves are terrific. They beget terror.

The thing about words is that meaning can twist just like a snake, and if you want to find snakes look for them behind words that have changed their meaning.

No one ever said elves are nice.
Elves are bad.
Damn good book, I think Pratchett's elves are far more interesting than Tolkien's.
They're based off of two different mythological concepts, the Scandinavian Alfar and the Celtic Fair Folk. The latter are friggin' scary, I agree.

Annoying, sparkly, giggly things; like if little children could fly.
"hey there"

-Navi...

the single most annoying sound ever devised.

errr... I think they're secretly evil.
They will help me take over the world one day, and that day will make me fairy king.
Then EA will release a completely original game.

*ahem* err... yes... does the OP count as a spam thread?

I rather like the way the fairys in Pans Labyrinth were portrayed, thats really how i envision them from then on.
Me too...aside from the fairly powerless bit, that was sad :(

But anyway, I propose we all indulge in some genocide and say "I don't believe In fairies" ^^

Are they naughty? Are they kind? Are they mad or noble or both? Are they tiny with buglike wings, or tall with antlers? Do they live in a palace or under the hill or in another world or inside a mushroom? Do they kidnap babies or do they grant wishes? Are they monstrously ugly or enchantingly beutiful?

Maybe they are all of the above.

What are fairies, in your opinion?(Assuming they exist, of course. In most people opinions they are "Not")
Faeries, or Sidhe as they are sometimes known, come in two varieties, or "courts", Summer and Winter, and creatures from basically every mythology ever make up the members of said courts.

Winter is very cold, and brutal. They won't think twice about ripping you apart and bathing in your blood, so long as it brings them an advantage.

Summer is more bright and cheerful. They are much more subtle than their Winter counterparts, but if it's to their advantage, they will kill you just as quick.

Essentially, Winter will stab you in the heart, Summer will get someone else to do it.

However, every word they say is the literal truth, as they are not physically capable of lying. That said, you can't ever trust anything they say, because they have learned how to speak the literal truth, while conveying something completely different. And if one makes a bargain with a Fae, it will invariably involve one getting screwed over. Said bargain will be kept to the letter, but what you expect is never what you get, and the price is always far more than you are willing to pay.

I've read a lot of Fairy tales in Irish Folklore and I can safely say. They are some cruel sons of bitches.

I think faeries can be different depending on what they are like. Although I mostly envision them as Scottish warriors.

"You'll have to kill his son, the fairy."

"Why's he called that?"

"Because he's a fairy"
