Falling behind

Right now, I have a PS2, a collection of 30-something games for it (and some PS1 games, too), and a computer that fares decently enough to play EVE, as much as I should get something better.

Yet, I look at the current generation of consoles and think that I'm really falling behind with all the cool, new games that people are into and talk about consistently. I don't get some jokes about popular games because I've not played them, though a few I've spoiled by reading about them online (like the Wikiquote for Portal). I didn't play God of War (PS2) until a month and a half ago.

I'm thoroughly happy with the console and games I've got now, but I want to get something from this console generation and see about what everyone's been talking. Honestly, I would love to give each console a try with the games people talk about the most. My personal plan is to wait long enough for a given console's price to drop enough for me to afford it and some good games (of course, if my job situation changes, then I could a current console sooner). However, I'm concerned that if I wait too long, the system I get will be eclipsed by the next generation of consoles and people will be more focused on that than the console on which I've settled.

So which games for each console do you find are worth getting that console? As much as I've checked reviews for games for each console, I find that although I'm sure I would like some games, it would seem like a waste to just get a console for only one or two games. Most of all, I'm looking for games, as in gameplay being 99%; I don't mind graphics being old or bad, unless they're terrible enough to interfere with the gameplay.

Thanks for taking the time to read through this, and, if it applies, thanks for any input.

Xbox 360: Largest selection of decent games, best console for the hardcore gamer. Live is a huge selling point, downloadable content plus online multiplayer. However it likes to commit suicide without warning which is very upsetting...

Games: Gears of War 1 and 2, Bioshock, Fallout 3, Oblivion, Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, Orange Box etc etc

PS3: Decent enough selection of games but I've a feeling the best is yet to come and at the extortionate price sony is charging for it right now I would wait a while (I'm getting mine when God of War 3 comes out!

Games: Resistance, Uncharted, GTA4, Little Big Planet, Killzone 2,

The Wii: Fun for five minutes as you go 'oooh look the tennis rackets move with my arm! that's new!' 15 minutes later you get a strange empty feeling... I hear Mario is pretty pimp on the wi though...

Games: Mario Galaxy, Mad world, ummm... ummm.... oh dear

Nintendo DS: 'Imagine Dream Wedding'... need I say more?

PSP: Gathering dust somewhere in a dark corner of the room. Again God of War is the biggest incentive for this one

Games: God of War Chains of Olympus. Thats it really. oh and lemmings.

360 is the choice for you. Largest selection of games, only outdone by the PC's huge back-catalog of games (Which, admittedly, if the exclusive games for the PC since 360's release were put into a hat, we'd barely line the bottom of it, and they'd all be MMO's or RPG's).

360's games have exclusives it only shares with the PC. See: L4D, Fallout 3 DLC, Fable 2, Gears of War.

360 games also have exclusives they only share with the PS3, while admittedy my brain's struggling to remember some of these titles, all that comes to my head right now is Lost Planet.

So if games are your thing, 360 is for you. (The Irony is, what else should a console be for?)

That's not including: Patches, Updates, DLC, Xbox Live, PC-Media Integration and one of the most user friendly ways to chat with friends...Even if the users themselves aren't quite so friendly.
