Hello escapist. Just as a disclaimer I had a large introductory post written out with reasoning behind the title but my lousy internet had a slight hiccup and I lost it all and I'm really not in the mood to type it all again.

In a nutshell I have a pack with Fallout 1, 2 and tatctics. I played 1 and 2 before but I faced many hardships and couldn't comprehend the mechanics so I stopped playing. But with all this hype for New Vegas I want to try playing them again, probably from the gorund up (I.e new character build and everything). So if you've played the games or even if you've played similar games and have any advice for necessary stats, explanation of gameplay mechanics or things I should consider doing to survive feel free to share them.

General tip: Save often. Especially in Fallout 2. That tutorial temple is tough.

I can't recommend a specific build, as they're all pretty valid when it comes to game progression.

Ok, Fallout is a bit earier to get into, it follows a pretty easy linear progression. You have to go to that stupid village and get XP, ammo and a level up, you can get the guy ian to help you too, then go to the raider place and kill them all... right there you are setup, loot guns and armour from their bodies - job done.

Fallout 2 is a bit harder to get into, you have to wade through the stupid temple bit... then there is that village.. skip though there to the town down south, walk right into the gunshop and whack the dealer, take all the stuff. there is another gun dealer in the houses somewhere, shoot him in the face with something powerful, take his stuff - job done. (the next thing you want to do is get the car, I htink you have to get a battery from somwhere, i cant remember but you need to do it otherwise without the car you burn too much time and its gets very difficult toward the end)

As for character build, you want small arms for sure, also energy weapons for later on, stats I can't really remember, just make sure you have enough strength to wear power armour and enough perception to shoot straight.

Random Advice as it comes to me:
Small guns is generallly a good skill to focus on for beginners.
Luck is a very important attribute even if it doesn't seem to be.
Gifted is a brokenly good starting trait, so I'd recommend taking that for your first playthrough.
Their are only a few areas where you will get irradiated, but unlike Fallout 3 the radiation will kill you very quickly so watch for that.
You can try to avoid fights if you seem to keep dying in them at the early stages.

Yeah, that temple at the start of two is crazy tough. After that though the games relly not all that difficult with any class i have built.

I think that small guns is most likely the strongest skill, especially with high pereption, as once you get power armour you just kill everything too quickly for them to ever get a chance to really hurt you. Still mighty good fun mind you.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
one build I heard about was go heavy in melee and str and get some perk that makes everything around you unlucky and then just run around punching ppl to death while their guns explode in their hands

There's a show of a well rounded game. Most nowadays seem to have game breaking builds.

my best advice is first go get the latest patch and get the MIB88 mod in NoMutantsAllowed website, after that you'll get all the quests that weren't in the original game, plus lots of goodies, like visible armor on characters (like the leather one on Vic, etc.)

then i suggest you in FO2 to start boosting in melee and small firearms, it will be important to you, i usually take a point from the luck factor for either Perception, agility or charisma (I use a lot of charisma in every other Rpg but it's my way of using stats).

also in the first starting levels, try not to adventure yourself too much... for example dont go too far at the south, right after leaving the temple, cause you might get nasty surprises.

i think that's all that comes in my mind.

Yeah. It took me 3 tries to finally get to the end of the temple.
Also: Fallout 2 is a pretty buggy game. At one point, I kept trying to enter this one area for a quest, but it kept crashing, so you should save often. (just like Hazy said)

In Fallout 1 and 2, take the Gifted trait. It raises all of your SPECIAL by one, but decreases all of your skills by 10% and you get 5 less skill points at level up. You can easily raise your skills again, but you can't raise your SPECIAL.

[sub] Except for later in the game, but I shouldn't spoil it[/sub]

As for game mechanics only advice is RTFM, but as for hints/tips, i.e. a build, it depends on what you want to play. Even those "useless" skills like outdoorsman and gambling can be quite helpful. In my last playthrough i played a kind of talker/gambler. With an high enough gamble skill (around 100%) and good luck (7 maybe?) you can literally make millions of bucks in casinos be just holding down a button for a minute.
I generally played diplomats, so i put quite a few points in charisma and intelligence. Intelligence in itself is quite a valubale attribute, since it not only raises the skillpoints per level, but it also gives you additional dialog options, if i remeber correctly.

A big science/repair skill may be necessary for certain later quests. I found it quite entertaining to go a lil for science and was rewarded. With science, you sometimes can examine certain objects and get experience for it. so, never leave an area before you didnt right-click-examine everything :) (well, you dont have to, but sometimes its worth it).

A decent comabt skill in the beginning can prove very valuable. Small Guns is the most common one, but it will take a lil time before you actually get your hands on a decent gun. Melee or Unarmed are good alternatives, especially unarmed since you can become a professional boxer later on in New Reno and get massive XP (and fame!). I went with unarmed in my last playthrough (unarmed is also good for powerfists, isnt it?)

If your out for a laugh, drop your intelligence to 1. It will give you a unique game-experience :)
