I read that you can use explosives to break open doors but I read that on a Fallout 2 board so it may not apply. If i can do this, how do I set the explosives?

You can. Put it in a weapon slot, stand next to the door, and use it. A timer will pop up, set it to something short so you're not standing there all day. And run obviously

Edit: TNT has a timer, although throwing a grenade might work, never tried it

I put the dynomite in the slot and click use. Then I chose the time. Then I ran away and I exploded because my character did not drop it. Thanks for trying though.

It doesn't really serve any other purpose, so that's not supposed to happen. *Tries it himself* WTF? It works in 2. Sorry mate :/

Got it. You set the timer like I said, but then you have to go back into the inventory, and as the arrow hold left mouse and select the droping hand. S/he will drop it and it will still be armed, then you can run.

Thank you. I have a terrible lock pick skill so I would not have been able to save Brother Jonathan and get power armor.

You're welcome. That's probably why they changed it in 2, roundabout nonsense.

Y'know, I started up Fallout for the first time in years, loaded up an old save at the cathedral, and went all the way to the hub to buy dynamite because I couldn't remember the answer to this... and yeah, like Francis said... you arm the dynamite either by sticking it in a use slot or by click-holding on it in your inventory and selecting use... then drop it.
Damn I'm slow.
