Censorship needs to be stopped not encouraged.
To borrow a phrase that's all the rage with the hip young kids on the internets these days,

"this."
While i agree, one must pick his battles. No point on wasting (a lot of)money, time and resources on a relatively small issue, when there are bigger battles to be fought. If i were Bethesda, I'd cave on this particular issue as well (as long as it is in fact only the names that got changed).

Great, the Australian government has to go and ruin it for all of us. I fucking hate censorship
Its not the government. Its one conservative AG from South Australia who is holding out. The other states and territories voted for the 18+ rating here, he voted against. You need a unanimous decision from all the Attorney Generals when it comes to changing classification guidelines for the OFLC, and because of the (dis)honourable Mr Atkinson, we don?t have an R+18 rating.

The OFLC are just doing their job, and while our system isn?t corrupt here like America?s, it?s very inconsistent.

But seriously, real-world prescription drugs is something that's censored? What if a game character in a game has really bad Asthma or cold? Do they just tell all the people in Australia, "Fuck it, you die in the first 30 minutes."? Can generic pain killers not be in the game because they're a drug? These are regular things that regular people use. Can we not have Mardi Gras beads in some games because some people use them for weird sex stuff?
Don?t be an idiot. If it?s legal, its fine. There is also an issue here where games must be free of advertising or something along those lines. In games like BF214, which I believe has advertising ingame for American customers, does not have it here in (most) games.

Malygris post=7.71146.715186 I also get the feeling that they decided that if they had to do this for the Australian version said:
Oh, I forgot about the Media Circus in the USA. That would have been a major influence?

FUCKING AMERICAN MEDIA!
(?Owned by Australians? oh dear.)

The Australian Government, or more importantly the Classification Board, wouldn't be influenced by god-knows-what.

"...To avoid confusion among people in different territories, we decided to make those substitutions in all versions of the game, in all territories."
So apparently it's not only Australia's fault, but also GameFAQ's as well? Curse them both!

If seeing drugs in a video game inspires you to do drugs, it's not a cause of the game and any insinuation otherwise is completely asinine. People are not so simple that they do what they see simply because they see it... and even if they DID, it would be their fault, because that's what being an adult means. Taking personal accountability for your actions.

Is Australia populated by impressionable five year old children, or what?

From what I understand, Cosmic, it is one AG who still sees video games as kiddie toys. Therefore, every game has to be made fit for kids, because God forbid that they are given the equivalent of an R rating. That would suggest that adults play video games, and we all know that never happens...

Though my plans to import a copy are effectively fucked, at least I can still be reassured that very little of importance is going under the knife. However, I'm still not quite sure why our unfortunate position of living without an R-Rating should burden more sensible corners of the globe.

The main problem with Fallout 3 is that they took out the ability to hit children in the groin with sledgehammers.

So...have these people NOTICED all the various studies that confirm that video games have little or no effect on behavior, or do they just ignore everything that doesn't fit their skewed vision of the world?

No, Michael Atkinson is an idiot and wouldn't notice a syst on his cock if anyone under 50 told him to check!

All of his arguments are based on emotion and a tiny minority pandering to his ego. I watched an interview with him on Good Game (kick arse, non-commercial gaming show in Oz!) about the R18+ issue, and he made a total goose of himself pretending to play Wii tennis in an attempt to "connect" with us gamers. Ausgamers.com sent him a few excellent questions, yet he chose not to answer most of them and dribbled crap in the ones he did.

He rubbished any research that disputed (read: pwnd!) his stance and used phrases such as "I feel..." or "I think...", that showed that he had done no credible research and based it all on opinion instead of fact. Bond University did an excellent survey that showed that 91% of Australians believed there should be an R18+ classification, and many other FACTS that supported the introduction of it. Atkinson then disputed it by saying that it was biased towards the games industry and financially motivated, not realising that it was an INDEPENDANT UNIVERSITY SURVEY!

The stupidest thing, though, is that it has been repeatedly pointed out to him that games that are refused classification in Australia are then illegally downloaded from overseas, therefore encouraging piracy and limiting parents' ability to monitor the approriateness of the games their children are playing.

I could go on, but I think you get the point! He is not very popular in this country and is obviously making us look bad overseas! Good job, Michael Atkinson, you twat!
