Repair skill gets very handy, very quickly, so invest in that. Also, put off using rad away until you're seriously sick, there's a quest in the wasteland survival guide (talk to moira in megaton) that'll clear it all for free and get you a neat perk.

find old oney as soon as possible and remember don't bring ANY weapons.
What wait?! Thats a terrib- [small]oh wait[/small], YEAH! I remember doing this and I got a TON of XP and so much loot... Totally worth it, this wise man speaks the truth, friend.
ALSO overwrite all your saves when you get into the middle of town and whatever you do, do not leave untill two ingame days later (NO WAITING).

S'more advice:

Intelligence is the most important stat. As such the bobblehead for it is found in the cience division of Rivet City.
The Medicine BH is on your dad's desk in Vault 101. There are two opputunities to get it. Don't waste them.
Stimpaks are your friend.
Moira Brown is your friend. Her quests are useful.
Use VATS often. It increases your attack power (it also increases the rate by which your weapons break, but...).
Don't use VATS with miniguns. Ever. Its a bad idea man.

If you see a Deathclaw and lack the proper equipment to bring it down, try to cripple the leg. After that they are about as dangerous as a bloatfly, all you have to do is keep your distance.

Always loot everywhere. You see a locker, file cabinet, desk, body--anything--at least search it first. Rarely, you'll find something with some substance like weapons, but what you're mainly looking for is chems and ammo. Chems are pretty light weight and having a full stock makes you invincible for most of the battles ahead. But the real gems are the ammunition. I cannot stress this enough, TAKE ALL THE AMMO YOU COME BY. ALL OF IT. Ammo has no weight AT ALL, so even if you don't use it, it will accumulate over time. Then just sell whatever you don't use then next time you see a shop. Essentially, the every shop owner you come by will run out of caps to give you by the time you're through with them, making you the richest bastard in the wastes.

I just made sure to get the Chinese Assault Rifle quickly.

Talk to that guy trying to get you to blow up megaton,
Tell the sheriff about him,
Sheriff goes to arrest him,
Guy kills sheriff,
You kill guy,
You get good Karma and both of their stuff. And the rifles in good condition.

I just walk around mashing the vats button then it zooms in on anything, even small monsters which are unnoticeable on the horizon. Unless they patched that?

Buy the equipment for your house, the medical station (I forget the names) is easily the most useful as you won't have to worry about rads or addictions again.

If you're anything like thorough you'll be swimming in caps, Stimpacks, ammo and stuff you can't sell by 3/4s through the game.

Put skill points into Small Guns, Science, Lockpick and Repair. Melee is rubbish.

When you get the zombie mask, equip it and go to the Dunwich Building. You'll get tons of ammo for the machine gun (I forgot what it's called)

Also, use hotkeys.

Don't tie yourself down by getting allies. I don't know about anyone else but whenever anyone else joined me they ended up being more of a hindrance than help. Also, having your cute dog partner blasted away next to you is incredibly traumitising.
Also, pick up the alien blaster gun, one of the most powerful laser guns in the game. Its at one of the radio stations up to the Northwest of the wasteland.

The Combat Shotgun is your friend. It solves every problem except when it doesn't, in which case it was your fault and you probably deserved it. Jerk.

Loot the he'll out of the Vault and Springfield(not the school) when you first start. There's a Bobblehead in your Dads office before the GOAT, Nd. bunch of stimpacks. Springfield or Springvalle, forgot, is full ofgood loot, meds and chems and booze, and a few grenades.
