Imagine the scene. its 2035 and the (enter disired government) is worried about a inevitable nucler war. They arnt thinking " aww crap were all gonna die " but "how is my 5 year old son/daughter gonna survive the apocalapse?". I have a answer for a unasked question, Fallout 3. By 2035 it will have probebly aged quite badley and its so low tech even a tramp could play it but thats not the point. Imagine you walk into your (now cumpulsary) fallout class and your robot teacher fires up its old (enter console here) and tells you to experiment...

Is it possible that a child could make good decitions even in the face of death?

tell me what you think... =-)

I question how you think levels of technology = acessibility. I'm fairly sure a tramp could play it now, but I digress

No

No

No

It is completley unrealistic, radiation dosen't work like that, thinks won't look like that, people won't live in bunkers or use plasma rifles

It is not that simple

I'm confused. What was the question? Are you asking us if we could learn how to survive a nuclear apocalypse by playing Fallout 3?

If it wasn't for fallout 3 i would die in the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust.

I would never have thought, of politely asking attacking mutants/beasts to stop and wait while i think about where i want to shoot them and take aim.

Um gonna say no. Should the shit genuinly hit the fan and the world is almost wiped out in a Nuclear Holocaust, I can't imagine drinking from the toilet is a good idea...or eating bits of dead squirrel.

I also can't imagine that two milataristic regimes, one claiming to the Army, the other the Government will do battle with each other using a giant robot that "EMBRACE DEMOCRACY, OR YOU WILL BE ERADICATED!"

But slightly more seriously, the sheer odds of the situation in Fallout 3 being the same as some future real-world holocaust are zillions to one

Even the fact that you have considered the fact that it COULD be education blows my mind. But I'll try to follow your line of reasoning. The world of any of the Fall Out games is not remotely realistic. If our world comes to nuclear apocalypse it will likely be more like On the Beach (if you haven't read it you should, don't watch the movie it sucked) than Fall Out. There will be no mutant animals or humans. Just death and destruction and more death. Yes the government will collapse and paper money will be worth nothing (but I very much doubt bottle caps will be the replacement currency, more like straight barter). Video games are meant for entertainment purposes at the point when a game becomes education it likely looses all entertainment value (except for gizmos and gadgets; I really loved that game and I learned how to build a fast soap box racer). If you want to be educated and entertained at the same time go watch a good film like Gran Torino.

Did anyone else read this topic and instantly think of that discussion video from the onion on the exact same subject?

And on topic: No, I don't think a game based around a fictional timeline with fictional technology and laws of nature would help kids in any way survive a real life nuclear war situation.

No deffinately not. Even if Fallout 3 were 100% accurate to the post apocalyptic world(which it deffinately is not), you have missed 1 important detail: The game is based in 2277. Big deal right? Wrong. The (game world's) Fallout was in 2077, so by the time Fallout 3 takes place, all useful technology and reasources would be found and used. However, the students in the class would need to learn about how to survive immediatly after the bombs, when there would be more reasources left but also more radiation. In short, the game might be useful is the task was to educate them on how to survive years after the bombs, but by then they would have died.

In short, no deffinately not a good post apocalypse tool. The only lesson that can be taken away is that you should always have enough 5.56 ammo

I think you're badly misinformed, and if you (or anyone else) relied on Fallout 3 as educational material for surviving a nuclear holocaust, those wacky super mutants would have you in a gore bag by mid-afternoon.[br]Or if we're bent on realism, then you'd probably just slowly die of radiation poisoning. Tough break.

I think that educational games are stereotyped. My point really was that games could have deeper meanings eg.

fable 2 = killing children is wrong but killing thair mums is OK

CoD 6 = Danger Close is too close

Fallout 3 = nukeing the planet is a big NO NO

Pokemon = Evolveing sucks

halo 3 = Truth looks a lot like regret

Mario bros = you cant write the same story over and over again and call it new

Link = Nintendo has a thing for princesses

The topic has a rather intellectual standpoint and a fun discussion might evolve out of this.
There is nothing fail about this topic.

Op. I think that even if it's just a game some people will get more reasonable from playing it. if you take the things said in it with some back thoughts. I mean, there is no bad and good, if you help someone there will always be someone else who will get hurt because of it.

You would have to search hard to find a more unrealistic portrayal of the Nuclear Post-Apocalypse, if my ability as a professional National Geographic watcher is to be believed.

Just kidding, I'm not REALLY taking this thread serious.

Explain how anything that you're saying is relevant when nothing that happens in Fallout 3 could possibly happen following nuclear war.
