In the end of my 360 game I had about 25,000 caps, they are useless by then due to the fact that you get some much crap during the main story line.

I have about 5500 at about 56 hours of playtime, and an additional 10000 worth of itmes if I ever wanted to sell my stuff. I went to my friends house yesterday and he has 64 hours of playtime and has 19100 caps 0.o

No idea as I am constantly trading for rarer ammo and due to my penchant for harder to find armour, repairs.

It is extremely easy to gain caps without using any perks to help you at all.

Just grab as much loot as you can carry at all times (making sure you are getting a good weight:cap ratio) and trade it to everyone and anyone. For example at the beginning when
You escape Vault 101 and fight the guards on the way out. Take all their armour, helmets and batons, repair them as much as possible to increase value while condensing size and sell them on to the traders outside Megaton.
That will get you a good starting amount. From then on just follow the same logic but with all enemies and trade with Moira and other places.

Also keep an eye out for grey, non damaged books and give them to the Lady in Arlington Library. She will give you 100 caps per book and you can collect at least a couple of a dozen of them throughout the game.

Let me introduce you to the mini-nuke - they are a decent price and are fun to shoot at civilians.

There I just found something for you to spend all your cash on :)

I had a lot because I had a really high stealth skill, and robbed everyone blind. I would find those wandering merchants, buy EVERYTHING they had, and as soon as they turn their back, I'd steal every cap they had. I was also very stingy and greedy, so I amassed a LOT. Don't remember exactly how much, though.

I had maxed repair really early so instead of carrying around a lot of a beat-up junk, I had a few really good items that sold for much higher.

They don't really have much use to be honest. You get power armour for free, and if you don't mind getting bad karma, you can get a free combat shotgun too. And you can just pick up food wherever you find it. Repairs don't really matter either, equipment is littered everywhere.

The only things I ever really spent caps on were upgrades for my suite in Tenpenny Tower.
