Good morning fellow Escapists, I have a question for you. What is the DRM like on the non steam version of Fallout 3? I am looking to play it soon, but the Steam version is still unresonably priced.

Thanks for your help,

I'm not sure exactly... but floating around there is a GFWL version.

That's very glitchy for a lot of people, so best to be wary.

But hey if there is a DRM free copy, go find that one!

I will not use GFWL. That's one of the main reasons I will never finish GTA 4, even though I got the Steam version, it still installed that on my computer without my permission.

Back to FO3, What I need to know is, if I bought the game on a disk in Game, what would it have on it? Would there be online activation, CD keys, GFWL? These factors determine whether I would be able to play it or not.

No DRM.

No Bethesda game has DRM.
Bethesda games use Securom in Europe/America and Starforce in Russia. And from what I remember Fallout 3 also uses Games for Windows Live.

GFWL is not DRM. It's a cloud service. It'd be DRM if it actually stopped anything, but having an offline account completely bypasses any sort of protection it -would- offer. But it offers none.

Fallout 3 uses SecuROM in the -loosest- way possible. It does a disc check. ...That's it. It's not really DRM.

EDIT: also there's a mod to disable GFWL. ...Which isn't illegal. You can find it just about everywhere..

No DRM. You only need the disc in when running from the launcher, but if you go straight from .exe or FOSE, you'll be fine.
