Fallout 3 Help

Hi there.

I need help with some console commands in Fallout 3, namely, how to stop a faction (The Family, from Blood Ties) attacking me. I managed to talk my way past the guard, and then stealth-point-blank-shotgunned him in the back of the head (as you do) which caused The Family to turn hostile, which removes a lot of the fun options from the quest (and the Drink Your Blood quest). I've tried resurrecting the guard (Robert) and resetting the quest, but I can't stop them attacking me.

Apparantly it has something to with the setally command, but I can't find the faction id for the family, and everytime I try the command with another faction (setally MegatonFaction playerfaction) the console tells me that the faction does not exist, even though it should (megatonfaction is the example to use from the fallout wiki on the command)

Does anybody have any idea?

Have you tried the fallout 3 forums or maybe a guide to the console commands?

Yup. Searched all the wikis I can find, no faction lists. Gamespot has a now dead thread which repeated exactly what the wiki said, the command which for some reason doesn't work. I've tried FalloutNexus but the stupid website keeps eating my registration attempts. I figured I'd try as just through the sheer volume of traffic I'd be able to find someone with an answer.

Kill all members then resurrect them, (This worked for me a few times, though I'm not sure it will always work).

Ah, that sounds like a good idea. I'll give that a try later. Thanks.

Don't kill the first guy and everyone's unhostile to you...less you want to be evil, because that's more fun, and the main guy owned me >.> I couldn't kill him when I done it.

OH... Oh you... you ninja b*st*rd! :D

Yeah, just reload the auto-save and stop screwing around with the game. Play it how normal people play it... you know... good. If you screw up and you dont like what has happened then load the last save OR live with it, thats the whole point of a game with choices.

I thought this was valid until you SHOTGUNNED THE GUARD IN THE HEAD.

Seriously, that messed it up.

I kind of see where he's coming from, except... why do you want them to be friendly toward you?

See, on this play through I'm subscribing to the Walter Kovacs School of Ethics and Punishment and as such, bad people should be slaughtered. Cannibals especially so.

So I shot the guard in the face with a silenced pistol.

Now, MY issue was that despite the fact the guard is nowhere near the main Family hideout, I shot him with a silenced weapon, and he got no shots off, the Family were IMMEDIATELY hostile at me when I got there. I have no idea why, as unless they have some kind of collective hive mind they should have no idea that their Guard was dead, only that I was let through for some reason. Nevertheless, it mattered little to my mission - they fell to well placed grenades and shots from my assault rifle.

I then took Vance's gear (including his jacket which I'm still wearing because, as a good guy, I don't have Lucas Simms' gear this time - although last time I obtained it by telling Simms about the guy who wanted me to blow up Megaton and that guy killed him while his back was turned so I took it off his corpse though I didn't kill him; this time I just killed the guy for suggesting mass murder in the first place), got all their weapons and ammo, took Vance's password and found Lucy's brother. He confessed that it was HE who murdered his parents and protested that he "needed help." Sounded like a certain child murderer from one of Professor Kovac's case studies, so, as I didn't have a melee weapon to hand, I made do with more gunshots to the head.

At this point my immediate plan was to go to Evan King in Arefu and explain the Family were taken care of, and inform Lucy West that her brother had sadly been murdered by the gang that had been terrorising her hometown. INSTEAD, I was informed that the residents of Arefu were now HOSTILE toward me (for some BIZARRE unfathomable reason as they had no idea of what I had done) and Lucy is cold and harsh (whereas when I had organised a settlement with the Family she had been mildly flirtatious except Fallout 3 is curiously devoid of potential love interests despite several flirty women).

Now, at this point I cry a great big WHAT THE FUCK. I dispatch some cannibals who've been terrorising a village and a guy who's committed patricide and matricide and suddenly I'M the bad guy??? The same feeling occurred when I took out the bastard slaver in Rivet City and security reacted like I'd done a BAD thing. If I remember rightly, when I played through last time nobody cared when I took out a whole VILLAGE of slavers who'd been kidnapping children.

The NPCs in Fallout 3 have a really warped view of crime and punishment.

If only consoles got the guilty pleasure of console commands.

It was worth reading this entire thread just for that post.

OT: Console player, no idea what to say other than Don't Shoot 'Em in the Head.

Can't you leave for a few days and come back? It works in Megaton and Rivet City.

There actually is a reason for that, albeit a strange one.

One of the quest resolutions is to console Lucy's brother and then convince the family to not only stop preying on arefu, but to help protect it. Because of that resolution, there's a trigger in the quest that will make arefu and the family part of the same faction. The problem is that this trigger is far too early in the quest, and can set the two factions to be as one before you've made any conclusion at all, so attacking any Family member after said trigger will make Arefu hate you. With that said, perhaps using the setally command with arefu's faction instead of the family's will make them stop attacking the OP?

[Potential solution to the OP's question in the apoiler.]

I'd either do the kill everyone and ressurect, or wait the ingame days. I'd also recommend something like ASU or CASM from http://fallout3nexus.com/ to prevent it from happening again.
