Fallout 3 on Steam

Yesterday I bought Fallout 3 on Steam. I downloaded it, got to the 'new game' page and the game crashed. I found out this is a common problem, so I changed the settings and downloaded GFWL but the same thing happens. It isn't freezing, the game file crashes. I checked online and the computer should run the game. I can run Oblivion, which requires similar specifications I believe. I'm thinking about loading in an end-of-Vault save but I don't know how (I don't know where to put the file).
So what I'm asking is:
1. Has this happened to anyone else and if so, how did you fix it?
2. Where do I put the save-game file?
It's the GoTY edition if that helps.

This happened to me aswell, start up FO3 and crash...some times I even managed to play for 5 mins before it crashed again.

Because hard copies never crash and they never come with GfWL.

OT: What version of Windows are you using? If you're using 7, changing the compatibility mode may help.

Go into steamapps, find Fallout 3, find fallout3.exe, open up its properties, go to the compatibility tab. There should be a checkbox about desktop windowing or something like that. Check that box.

Fallout3 is just buggy.

If I'm right to assume, you have a quad core CPU which can cause crashes for that game. The save file location should be in "my documents" by defualt if you have Vista/Win7
