I just got Fallout 3 last week cuz I found it really cheap and I'm really loving it so far. There's just one question I have for those who have played all three games:

Is there anything story-wise I'm missing in this game by not having played the first two Fallouts?

No. Not at all. There are a few references in it for fans of the older ones, but you're not really missing out on anything.

Nope, you're completely safe. The references are minor and have nothing to do with the storyline.

Absolutely not.

BUT: I must warn you. Get Broken Steel, for the sake of playing on after the main story.
I was actually considering getting that because it's been recommended to me once before. Would you recommend getting it now or when I'm closer to finishing vanilla fallout?

Nope, but it would have been wise to get the GOTY edition.

Unless you did, in which case, bravo!
I didn't get the GOTY because (a) I didn't see it there and (b) I've heard a couple of the DLCs are broken for PS3

Nope, Fallout 3 is on the East Coast as opposed to the first two games being on the West Coast, so there are a few minor references but nothing big. Besides, the game contradicts so much stuff from the earlier games anyway.

All of 'em worked fine for me.

Except god damn Mothership Zeta that always froze at the first scene..... but I got it to work eventually.

Yes I say get the expansions at some point as each one fleshes out the world more. And no you aren't missing anything. A very self contained story.

They placed it on the other side of the continenet so most of it is new stuff.

the only thing you're missing is historical reference, and anything important is explained within the game if you take the time to ask the people. A few references:

Mutants Mention "The Master". He was the original super mutant and the final boss of Fallout 1
The GECK. Eventually you'll go on a quest to find the GECK, which was the major McGuffin in Fallout 2
The Enclave and the Brotherhood of Steel both have a lot of history in the various games
Vault Tec and the various states of the Vaults are interesting even in Fallout 1/2
Harold the Mutant, who you can encounter in Fallout 3 has been in each of the Fallout games and has been a fan favorite through the years

Other then that, there's not really that much a lot of the names are the same, but they never played a huge role in the old games.

If you're interested in the older stuff, the best thing to do is either find a good Let's Play, or just look it up on http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_Wiki

Far less so here than in new vegas. There's a quest infact where they give you a test to prove your NCR citizenship in NV. Having played the first two games I finished it in no time and got them all right lol.

As for story points Altorin and Alternate PFG covered most everything. I might add that FEV is the stuff that creates mutants, the west coast mutants were lead by "the master".
