Fallout 4 Has Sold 12 Million Copies

That's a lot of wasteland wanderers.

Bethesda has just released an official Pornhub traffic dropped 10% [http://bethsoft.com/en-us/news] when the game came out. Fallout 4 has, at time of writing, sold 12 million copies, making the company a whopping $750 million. It has become the fastest selling Bethesda title of all time.

While a lot of those sales were physical copies (especially for the PS4 and Xbox One editions), Fallout 4 has also broken some digital records. On Steam, Fallout 4 became the number one game played, surpassing Grand Theft Auto V's previous record for concurrent play with over 470,000 players. The Fallout 4 Pip-boy companion app [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/161313-Fallout-4s-Pip-Boy-Companion-App-Released] also became the number one downloaded app on the iTunes store.

Additionally, Twitch has stated that Fallout 4 was the "most viewed game launch of all time".

"We're extremely proud of Todd Howard, Game Director at Bethesda Game Studios, and his experienced team of developers for their talent and dedication in creating this extraordinary game," said Vlatko Andonov, President of Bethesda Softworks. "Fallout 4 is a masterpiece in game development and storytelling, providing fans hundreds of hours of fun as they explore and are challenged by this fascinating, beautifully crafted world."

Sounds like a lot of people having fun, now if only I could play it given my laptop can't handle the game.

So by arbitrary math and bullshit calculation, Pornhub has about 120 million regular visitors. Well done Pornhub, nice try Bethesda.

So, I guess quantity is better than quality after all. ,)

They should definitely congratulate their PR manager the most.
That manager did some amazing work drumming up hype and fans.

I'm still waiting for project Van Buren though.

Not surprising, really. Considering the massive amounts of hype and marketing backing the game and lengths the developers have gone through to turn the game into a open-world action game rather than an RPG, I can understand why it reached such a mass appeal.

Although the fact that they only state shipped copies and leave out how many were sold is rather dubious. Considering that the PC version only sold about 1.7 million according to Steam Spy and the current console userbases are much smaller than when a game like Skyrim was released (which sold just over 3.5 million in its first 48 hours), I'm having a hard time believing these numbers to be true.

Damn sloppy one though. I've been loving my 27 hours into the game so far, but I'll be damned if my gameplay experience wasn't mired by tons of minor annoyances that could've been so easily remedied.

Sloppy interfaces for certain things (the bloody building interface), tons of graphical bugs, pretty bad optimization and performance issues (especially for AMD users, of which I am one) and some general design flaws (from FPS being coupled to the game engine to your inventory filling up freakishly fast). You name it, really. That's not even going into more subjective changes/steps back over previous Fallout games.

And honestly, reviews have been skirting over honest issues a little too much if you ask me. So for Bethesda to call it a 'masterpiece in game development' is pushing it quite a bit. For that it really could've used a few more months of polish.

They shouldn't really toot their own horn like they seem to be doing here. But then again, most critics are sort of letting them get away with it.

It's funny, those of us on the PC who bought the physical copies, still had to end up downloading it digitally. Not "ha-ha" funny I suppose. Unless you consider having restrictive Internet a joke. I do, but it's not that funny.

BTW, those 12 million, are those units shipped or confirmed sales? There is a very important difference.

Nothing is going to stop EA from saying "We shipped 15 million copies of SW:BF worldwide! Go us!"

... cuz that is what Bethesda just said...

oh, i'm certainly not gonna say that it's without problems. in particular, AI pathing has been a huge issue since I walled off the gas station. I had to change my configuration to accommodate, and that really broke immersion for me. I've had the game crash on me twice, but thanks to checkpoints, autosaves and quicksave, I never lost more than 10 minutes of work.

the inventory thing... man, you really think they would have thought that through better. I knew this would be an issue since they announced harvesting scrap. yeah, suddenly everything in the wasteland is useful, but that means you're picking up everything too. i'm managing my inventory so much that it gets obnoxious at times. same with armor and weapons. instead of leaving even low level gear behind, I get aspirations of equipping all my settlers with gear, so leaving behind a set of metal armor is unthinkable. carry weight is a huge issue, but one mitigated by the new way leveling works, in my opinion.

I'm confused by the claim of a record-breaking concurrent player stat on Steam. Is that the most concurrent players in a game that isn't Dota 2? Because at the time of writing this comment, at about 10 in the evening on a Saturday, there are more than 500,000 players currently in-game, 30,000 more than the reported "record". At its daily peak, Dota 2 reports around 1,000,000 concurrent players. Daily.

Do Russians not count as players?

Took the words right out of my mouth.

Although this is my honeymoon period mouth. It says a lot of nice things about my most anticipated games shortly after their release.

But I know I'll have my moneysworth by the end of my current playthrough (already past the one hour per £ mark) and the many playthroughs to come so who cares?

I hope we get a New Vegas equivalent. That would be amazing. I've really come to appreciate New Vegas of recent. But I haven't even gotten to the meat of this one yet so I need to shut up.

It IS true that the reason for the initial high sales has a lot less to do with the games quality and more to do with the PR and hype train, though.
It's not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm 12 hours in, and I constantly find myself ever so slightly put off. Maybe my expectations were too high after New Vegas, but FO:4 feels like it has more in common with Rage than Fallout. Like they've made a shooter dressed in fallout clothing.

Like I said it's not bad game, heavens no. As a game it's pretty good. But is it good enough to bear the Fallout 4 name, after the franchise's previous brilliant entries? I'm not so sure.

This honestly feels like a difficult situation for critics. Because yes the game is pretty glitchy right now, and that does get in the way of enjoying it somewhat. But while that bears mentioning that t wouldn't stop me recommending the game. There'll be patches enough to clear out the major issues and what remains will be an unambiguously great game. It might be sloppy of them but the end product is still great.

"So, Leonardo, tell us about your latest painting."
"Si, I mean, yes. It is a masterpiece. 12 million tickets have been made. Have you seen the smile? It is quiet, enigmatic, even a little mischevious."
"Yes - it seems quite popular. But we wanted to ask you about her hands."
"What hands?"
"Well, quite. We couldn't help but notice that she seems to have seven fingers on one and the other... is that a hoof? It's a bit distracting."
"You know I cannot draw hands. I have not been able to in my past few paintings, but that should not detract from her smile. Her eyes. The mysterious stranger..."
"Leonardo - we are impressed - of course - and we are enjoying the painting in the same way we enjoyed the others you have done..."
"But..."
"But. Yes - the hands are an important part of the painting. Are you sure that you want to call it your masterpiece (singular)?"
"The hands..."
"Yes. It's a lovely painting and enojoyable - and we love your style, particularly the badly painted hands, but - could you not practice that some more and get it right before trying to sell your tickets?"
"... did you notice she is carrying an invisible gun?"

That's why you don't buy a game on release. Especially not a Bethesda game. It's much more worthwhile to wait for the most important patches and mods to be released first. I don't understand why people are so impatient and have to get the game on release day.
