Fallout 4 News Won't Be Coming Anytime Soon

Bethesda Game Director Todd Howard says it's going to be awhile before we get any actual, real information about Fallout 4.

There's been a flurry of excitement about Fallout 4 over the past few months, driving fans to distraction with breathless tales about the next entry in the famed post-nuclear RPG franchise. Trouble is, they've all been false, even the weeks-long, excruciatingly detailed prank [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/130324-Fallout-4-Teaser-Site-Is-A-Hoax] that unfolded at thesurvivor2299.com. Nonetheless, all that heat has to mean something, right? It's been more than three years since Fallout: New Vegas, after all.

Howard said Bethesda really admires the effort put into the best of the Fallout 4 hoaxes, calling them "a testament to our fans," but as for when legitimate information will be forthcoming, he advised that breath not be held.

"We don't [have a timeframe] but I think it's gonna be awhile," he told Rock, Paper, Shotgun. "We've gotten fairly used to all the questions and curiosity over the years. Everyone wants information. Right now, we're just trying to figure out which of our ideas are going to stick and finding an appropriate time to talk about it."

Fallout 4 isn't a question of "whether" but "when," so it's not like the fate of the franchise hangs in the balance, but it would be nice to have something to keep us warm at night while we wait. Alas, the only bone Howard was willing to throw was a statement that the resurgence of the PC, and the new generation of PC-like consoles, is having a real impact on what Bethesda can do with future projects.

"It's exciting that the new consoles are very PC-like. That opens up avenues for us going forward to do things that we've wanted to do in the past," he said. "There are kind of random ideas we're working on right now, and it's like, 'Wow, I think there's potential here to do some really cool stuff.'"

Well fuck, now I'm not sure if it will still be released in a glitchy state looking at all the time their taking with this.

...

Yeah it's probably still going to be glitchy.

Now you know exactly how we Halo fans feel now with Halo 5. 343 still hasn't released any details at all really.

OP: Ah ha! Just more proof that the next gen of consoles really is something to look forward to.

I wish they did what Respawn did, release a picture of blurry concept art and say "There, that's proof we're doing something besides our word."

I feel if they change how the game saves information and reduces the size of the save files it might actually be more stable later on. I remembered with Fallout 3 my save directory was between one and two gigabytes in size because I explore everywhere.

The reason why I am leaning towards file size issue for once you get the patches installed the game runs much better at the beginning and the more you explore the worse the game runs.

Somehow, I am relieved. Every new Fallout or Elder Scrolls game sucks countless hours of my life into it. I haven't even finished my second playthrough of Skyrim yet and there are other games waiting to be played.

Translation: New console generation delayed development/stopped it altogether for FO4.

This is good! Now it will probably be started from scratch and be quite good looking.

Sounds like 2016 at the earliest. Possibly 2017. I love the series but I can wait, especially after Skyrim was so disappointing, at least to me. Skyrim took all the character creation I loved so much out of it and made the game pretty much a simple action game with action that was mediocre. It was like they didn't understand the strengths of their game.

I think Fallout fans have been waiting longer seeing as New Vegas was released in 2010, Halo 4 was released in 2012.
Also, according to this article you'll have to wait till 2015 for Halo 5.

OT: Well I'd like to think that the delays are so they can make the game's main story and gameplay both good and not buggy. Then I remember it's Bethesda and just throw those excuses out the window. XD
Anyway, I still hold by this: let Obsidian do the story and characters, let Bethesda do the environment and setting, and both join together to do the gameplay. Either we'll get pure gold, or the buggiest game known to humanity.

There was an update to that article. He said he wasn't actually confirming H2A. He has no real knowledge about it.

And it doesn't really matter anyway. Halo 4 may have come out in 2012 but compared to any of the other Halo games, it really wasn't that good. Not good enough to tie us over until the next game anyway. Past games fulfilled that.

long time ideas... mods available for consoles?
Probably things like that along with better environments and more complex enemies. I figure since they've been making these games for multiple platforms then they have to start with the lowest common denominator. If consoles are raising the bar on their end then Bethesda can start including some of the awesome ideas that PC players have been modding into their games. I'm down to wait a bit for another fallout if Bethesda needs it. If been happy with their releases over the years, they're one of the few studios I still trust to impress me.

"Fallout 4 News Won't Be Coming Anytime Soon."
Fallout has monsters to shoot.
The protagonist of the Half-Life series shoots monsters.
3 comes before 4.
Half-Life 3 confirmed.

But seriously, let's not get hyped. "When it's ready" effectively means "it's not even a thing yet and won't be for years to come."

Really, we should be used to waits like this by now. I mean, look at Valve.

I am just going to assume they are going to build it in a new engine and that means longer development time.

If you need me in the meantime i will be running through a heavily modded Mojave with a gang of robots.

Remember, Bethesda: drivable cars. Let me and my companion(s) of choice go on a post-apocalyptic road trip with a trunk full of loot.

Well the thing is, they may be waiting for a lot of the interest to die down so they can do a massive marketing campaign to get all the new gamers and the old gamers back into the series and get tons of people torrenting, i mean, buying, the other fallout games and maybe even other Bethesda games. ITS ALL JUST A MASSIVE MARKETING PLOY

Fallouts 2 and Tactics are your friends in this.

OT: Cautiously optimistic as ever with Bethesda. Hoping they keep in Obsidian's 'Survival Mode' (I flat out refuse to call it Hardcore Mode) as it added so much to the play and feel of New Vegas. Really looking forward to seeing the Commonwealth hinted at in 3, but I'd much rather Bethesda did what it sounds like they're doing - taking their time and doing it thoroughly rather than rushing out a half-arsed version to catch the new console gen.

That PC-like statement makes me think of the console modding that they wanted to bring to Skyrim. Coupled with Steam Workshop, I'd watch that space.
My hesitation with expecting mods on the consoles is how they would get onto the platform with how restrictive the consoles seem to be. For a user couldn't just download the mod to their PC and then copy them over for that would require breaking the security on the console and Bethesda can't condone that. So that really leaves Microsoft and Sony to host it for their consoles or Bethesda to work something so they can host it.

Now, I am not saying its impossible, but it will require Bethesda to do more logistics to make sure it works.

I did like that aspect of Fallout: New Vegas and Sawyer's mod for the game was fun as well. I have made a few tweaks myself over the time, but I am hoping they make a few more changes to the game so it doesn't feel as much like Elder Scrolls with a Fallout Skin for that is how Fallout 3 and to a lesser extend Fallout New Vegas felt to me.
