For me it helped when I just changed the colors from 32 to 16 bits.
Hopefully this helps someone.

To fix the "rainbow graphics" follow these instructions:
1. Right click anywhere on desktop and click "Screen Resolution"
2. Start up Fallout while the Screen Resolution window is open. Done!

Dude, thanks so much. I tried everything I thought, searched a tons of threads and nothing worked except for your advice. Thanks alot brother. Roadster213 FTW

BTW I am running windows 7 64 bit for anyone who is wondering.

I installed both 1, 2, and Tactics and had the same issue with my new HP with Windows 7. The only thing I installed extra was the most recent version of the High Res patches (there are separate ones for each game). Once the games are booted after the patches are installed, you can go into the Options menu and adjust the settings to suit your display.

Worked beautifully for me, and everything runs flawlessly.

I really want the collection as well, and I also have Windows 7, I can't find anywhere else saying yea or nea on whether any of the 3 in the trilogy collection will work with Windows 7.
The entire trilogy collection works with 7.

Uninstall, after reinstallation only download/install the High Res patch and nothing else. That is, assuming your system specs are compatible/capable, which I'm just going to assume they are.

I uninstalled the game and reinstalled, I also only downloaded the high res patch; while in the options menu the screen froze. Do I need to adjust my screen display? Also, forgot to mention that i have win 7 and am using a laptop.

Windows 7 64bit home premium

Fallout 2 with Killap's Unofficial patch 1.02.27.3

for me this fixed it, edit the "ddraw.ini" file:

;XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
[Graphics]
;Set to 0 for 8 bit fullscreen
;Set to 4 for dx9 fullscreen
;Set to 5 for dx9 windowed
;A dx9 mode is required for any graphics related script extender functions to work (i.e. fullscreen shaders)
;Modes 1, 2 and 3 are no longer supported
Mode=4

[change the "Mode" value to 4 from 0]

How about simply not buying the piles of fail that are Windows Vista & Windows Vista 2 (The slightly less shat on edition) and stick with the last good Windows OS?

Yeah, do that.

Windows 7 and Vista are completely different.
I fail to see how they differ, from a practical standpoint. They're incompatable with the same things for the same general reasons. And they're both bloated, obese OS' due to the same companies' incompetence.

Um, how do I install the high resolution patches if I've bought it on Steam? I'm having the colour problem so I downloaded the patch but I don't know where to go from here since the game is saved onto Steam rather than one of my folders. What do I do?

I have a different problem, I can't even install the collection on Windows 7. I've tried about 4 times, and each time it just stops at a random part of the extraction and never continues. The only clue I've gotten so far is one time it displayed " Error: ermission denied " In the installation details. Any ideas?

3 out of the 4 times it stopped at "Extract : Fallout 2 1.02.25\", did this take considerably longer to do for anyone?

Hey guys i've been having this issue where after anywhere between 2-10 minutes of playing, i get these vertical rainbow lines appear in game (which makes it unplayable), and once that occurs, if i try alt tabbing, quitting the game or anything basically i get a blank blue screen (no error details) etc - forcing a restart.

I've tried running as admin, compat 95/98, 256 colours, 16 colour bit mode, 800x600, etc etc etc...
Let me clarify, it isn't the rainbow palette issues (ie - the resolution screen fix), this brings up vertical lines with rainbow pixels. Trying to alt tab, quit the game or anything else causes the screen to go blank blue (no error details). Can't get a screenie, because i can't do anything bar reset my computer. On a side note - the game still runs, it doesn't freeze as such it's just unplayable... and i cant quit obviously because then i get the blue screen
