I was fortunate enough to attend all 3 days of the GameX expo in Philadelphia. It was the first year for the show, so there were some rough patches. And by "rough patches" I mean "people singing Rock Band at max volume who can't carry a tune in a bucket while Yahtzee's trying to answer questions during his panel." Anyway, by and large it was a good time. I thought it was a success and I am looking forward to next year. I was under the impression this sentiment was shared by those in the area who are a part of our community.
Two weeks before GameX, the VGXPO [http://www.videogame.net/vgxpo/] was held in downtown Philadelphia. It, too, was relatively successful, with exhibitors and vendors coming in from all over to support a new show in the industry. To me, it's a bit like the days of Ford and Chrysler getting started within spitting distance of each other in the greater Detroit area. But unfortunately not everybody seems to think so.
This gentleman [http://j2games.com/new/forum/index.php?topic=3972.msg11610#msg11610], who is a senior advisor for VGXPO, is concerned that GameX's presence is bad for both shows. It seemed at first that he was interested in thoughtful, well-reasoned debate on the merits and flaws of these two shows being so close to one another, and what we as a community could to do ensure everyone comes through the experience happy and successful.
And then...
In this thread [http://j2games.com/new/forum/index.php?topic=3976.0], he calls out GameX for being "ruthless and well-funded," with some of its advisors having come over from VGXPO in the interest of getting GameX off the ground. He claims that with GameX opening its doors to even mediocre success, it has taken success away from VGXPO and has doomed both shows. He also says that the Escapist was "pressured" into attending the show. GameX employees have been asked not to dignify the man's butthurt hatespeech with responses, and faced with such patient stoic silence, the man invokes Godwin's Law.
I think Mr. Kunkel has shown us his true colors. Unfortunately, I seem to be out of Troll Chow.
