A friend is offering me Fallout new vegas on the PC quite cheaply. It has been used.

He claims that I can just put the disk in and install it but last time I bought a PC game second hand, I couldn't play it because it required steam, and the previous owner had already used the code.

To anyone who owns new vegas on the pc (and didnt buy it off steam), is this the case or can i just put the disc in and install it?

(googled this and didnt find anything useful)

If it's used, you need to buy it on Steam for it to run, otherwise it's just as if you've pre-loaded it

He is playing you. If it's been used, it's been tied to a Steam account, and would not work for you unless you had that account.

He's lying. If he installed it and played it on his computer/Steam account, it's tied to his account and you will not be able to play it.

Ummm...I have a question. Why can't i buy a game for my Computer without using steam? What if i wanted to play NV or Portal 2 without internet. Would i be able to?
You still need steam, but you can switch it to offline mode. That being said, the games need internet to be initially validated.

You can turn Steam into Offline Mode, and play said games offline. As for playing those without Steam entirely, no can do. They both use Steamworks exclusively on the PC.

I find it hard to believe you could find a laptop that can run new vegas that doesn't at least have an ethernet port. But hell, I've been surprised before.

I would suggest getting your money back.

Perhaps you could circumvent it, but as far as I'm aware, that is illegal.

How do you afford a custom built laptop and can't afford the Internet or games?

I think you should save your money.
